We decided our boy name before we were even TTC. Once I was pregnant, it was a matter of deciding on the FN/MN order for a boy and now that we hashed that out (team green), that's the definite order we would use if we ever have a boy. Every once in a while, DH ponders switching the MN to the FN spot and I convince him again based on the fact that we were so sure what we were going to do when I went into the delivery room last time.
We have a short list of other boys' names in case we happen to have twins or two sons and we've been in agreement on those since DD was born almost 4 years ago.
Girls' names are a lot harder. There are some names still on our list that we liked from the last time around, but only DD's name really felt like "the one." The only other current super strong contender has the same drawbacks it had the first time we considered it- possible pronunciation issues being one of them- so we're still looking and re-evaluating our list from time to time.
I think the only one that definitively came off the list was Mercedes, mainly due to common U.S. perceptions of this name that I hadn't really considered last time around, I still like the name, but hate that people classify it as "trashy" because they would think I'm naming someone after a car.
A lot of ours have carried over, but some of our favorites have been ruled out because we used elements of those names for DD.
Example: Betsy's middle name is Everett, which was my MIL's maiden name. We had several short-listed name options for boys and girls that included Everett. Those are now off the table. We also love the name Eliza, but that has been ruled out since Betsy's full name is Elizabeth.
Our list carries over. We add new names as we come across them, and some old names get removed for one reason or another. But for the most part, our names carry over.
Most of our list has carried over. There are a few names that have lost their appeal over time that have been either eliminated, or bumped down the list. And some that have been removed because they wouldn't work with our son's name. And new names have been added, as well.
I just want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me.
We are only on baby #1, but don't plan on spacing our kids that far apart (I am already over 30!). Just last night, we discussed saving one of our favorite names for another boy if we have one. My Dh and I like a lot of names, just not the SAME names haha, and we've become attached to two boy names in particular that we actually agree on. So it's likely (but not set in stone) that we'll save the unused boy name for another boy.
Dh wouldn't seriously discuss girl names with me because he wanted to find out the gender before talking names. So that will be almost from scratch (I have a few faves that may carry over since I did sneak a peak at girl names before our U/S).
That said... I've watched my sisters' lists change every time... each baby/pregnancy is different, so I anticipate looking at names afresh each time too.
Our girl name will carry over if we have a girl next. DH and I both love our girl name so much, and we have had a hard time agreeing on another girl's name, so we will definitely be using our girl name next time if the next one is a girl.
We didn't consider any other first names for this pregnancy (boy) as we had it picked out...umm...two years before he was even conceived, so next time around will be interesting if it is a boy.
Our middle names are all set in stone (family names) as for first names, my second choice for DS is now my first choice if we have another boy.
My choice if DS had been a girl however (Natalie) is now out of the running for any future daughter because it has become too popular among my friends and I can't stand the nn Nat.
This is our first so I'm not sure what will happen. It's funny though b/c we were just talking about this last night and wondering what others do. Interesting.
Our boy first name has carried over every time (it's after my father), the middle name has changed each time. He will likely go by his middle name, so it changes as our tastes change.
None of our girl names have carried over. For DD1, we only had one girl name and that's the name she got. For DD2, we had 3 girl names but the other two don't do it for me any more.

I've had our girl name picked out since I was little (it's after my 2 grandmothers).
