Cloth Diapering

My CD's STINK!

I don't think I've been CD'ing long enough for my diapers to stink, but they do.  It's a pretty strong ammonia smell that won't seem to go away.

I wash in Charlie's Soap, with a cold water rinse followed by a hot water heavy-duty cycle.

What am I missing?

  • I haven't been CDing very long ether but from what I have heard...

I also read if you are using a CD safe detergent, which you are, it may help to up the amount of detergent you are using. Where if you use a detergent not specified for CDs then lowering the amount of detergent you use may help. Also maybe add an extra cold rinse after to make sure you get all the detergent out to stop any build up that way.

  • Since you are in the PNW, I would recommend a final rinse with 1/2 c vinegar and adding 1/4 baking soda to the first rinse.  Ammonia is caused by buildup or pH balance, and upping detergent will fix other things like barnyard smell.

Good luck!  Ammonia will often also cause a burn-type rash if persistent.

  • Ammonia actually means you need to reduce the amount of detergent you're using. Also, you need another rinse in there, which might help tamp down the detergent residue left in your diapers which is leading to ammonia.

If all else fails, switch soap.

  • Adding about a cup of vinegar to the bleach/fabric softener dispenser on my top loader, and an extra rinse/spin at the end of the wash got rid of my ammonia. I've also been drying outside in the sun on any nice day, which I think has helped too (after ammonia stinkies, I got barnyard! I upped the amount of detergent and they're gone now too).

    This.

Ammonia smell usually means detergent build-up.  You probably need to cut down on how much detergent you use.  You also need add an extra rinse to your wash cycle.  I've had better luck using a quick wash instead of a rinse for my first cycle.

If you decide to switch detergent, we have the same water :) and I use Tiny Bubbles.
