Re: adoption tax credit?

  • Check out the IRS website for more info.  The adoption tax credit is for a qualifying child, which is typically "special needs".  Special needs can mean different things from older child, to minority, to medical needs.  You can claim this the year your adoption is finalized.  Check into it and see if you qualify.  Being past the deadline, I don't know if you may have missed out.
  • thanks for the info! we're just starting to look into adoption, so any info is appreciated Smile

  • To qualify you don't need to adopt a SN child.

Currently the adoption tax credit is for an adoption finalized in that calendar year. You provide documentation that you finalized an adoption, and the government gives you $ back. For last year and this year, it's $13,100 per child, but it's set to expire at the end of this year. If it is allowed to lapse, there will be no reimbursement for healthy adoptions, and a $6K reimbursement for SN adoptions. If it's extended, all bets are off on the amount depending on what legislation goes through.
