Diaper Sizes?

I am a FTM and I am hoping maybe one of you out there who has a little one already might be able to help me figure this out.

We have had a lot of people buy us diapers for shower gifts, and we have gotten several packages of newborn ones, they all have gift recipets so I can exchange them if I need to.

How long will a baby actually wear a newborn size diaper?  The packages say up to 10lbs but I have heard that isnt really true and that they run really small.  Should i exchange them and just get a size one which says up to 14lbs?

Any advice ladies?

  • With my kids I only used the size newborn for a few days keep one or two packs. Get size one and two you can fold the top down for cord care

  • We used two cases (88 ct) of the newborn diapers plus whatever the hospital sent us home with. DD was just under 8 lbs, so it's not like she was tiny. I don't know how many you have, but I'd probably hold onto them for now and exchange them later if you need to.

  • You may have to wait to see how they fit your kidlet and contain their output.

The biggest reason that we ended up having to change sizes was not how the diapers fit our son, but his pee would soak through (and he doesn't have diabetes or anything wrong with him, he simply is a big outputter!) them really quickly. Even at the hospital he'd pee through the newborn swaddlers.

  • DS was 8lb 14oz and never used newborn diapers.  He stayed in size 1 for maybe 6 weeks (he's a slow grower) and stayed in size 2 for a LONG time.

  • My DD was only 6 lbs she wore nb for 6 weeks so we went through a ton of them.  I would wait to see how big your baby is.

  • My DS was never in newborn size diapers. He started in the hospital in size 1. I assumed he was in NB size and bought a pack when we ran out of what the hospital supplied us with and was sorely mistaken :-) I would just get size 1 and my DS was 8lb 3oz at birth.

  • It all depends on the kid. Just wait it out.

  • DS was 8 lbs 5 oz and i used the one pkg of newborns i had purchased and then just went straight to size 1's.  so i'd keep at least one pkg of the newborns for now in case those are the better size, then maybe exchange the rest for size 1's.  the size 1's will always get used eventually, and if you wind up fitting in newborns at first you can just order some overnight from diapers.com or amazon and you'll be set again. (that's just what i would do--that way you avoid the situation if your LO goes straight to size 1's that you have to go exchange lots of newborns when you're recovering)
