getting out...

so our boys are almost 4 months old but i really haven't taken them many places per the md's recommendation to wait until flu and rsv season are over.  now i am wondering how to best take them both to places like target and the grocery store. i guess the only way i can imagine is try to wear one and leave the other in a carseat?  is it safe to put the car seat on the top of the cart or just set it down in? i guess i'll figure it out..just want it to be as smooth as possible!

Re: getting out...

  • I've taken the girls out and started them in the stroller, but usually by the end of the trip, I am carrying one in the Baby Bjorn, so it's good to always have that handy at least. But because they do not take the bottle (we're working on it), trips always are planned right after feedings and don't last too long. 1-2 hours out tops. Maybe it'll get easier when they're able to sit in the cart? I would put a car seat in the cart but not on top, because I don't think mine would fit in the groove safely. Good luck! Hope it goes well!

I had the stroller clips too. In addition, the handle on the small baskets at Target were just wide enough to go around the handle on my DSNG. I never bothered with a shopping cart. If I needed more stuff than I could handle in the basket and storage area of the stroller, I waited to go shopping with DH.

  • If I was doing regular shopping, I would use the stroller, with a carrier handy. If it was Target or grocery shopping (where I needed a cart), I would leave one in the infant seat and wear one in my Moby (there is definitely not room for 2 infant seats, at least not if you want to put anything in the basket!). Fussier baby gets in the Moby. It's so nice when they can sit up in the gorcery carts, but even then, I have to make sure to go to the stores with the double seats.

I had the Chicco Keyfit infant seats and they don't have little "hooks" on the bottom to secure them to the grocery carts. They do sit on top, but I never thought it was that safe. It seemed like they could fall off if someone bumped the cart really hard. Anyway, I started using the buckle/strap on the cart and looped in through the back of the infant seat (like under the seat belt part in the back), and then tightened it. The seat could still get bumped and maybe pushed to the side, but at least it won't fall off.

It will be good for you to get out. Just don't expect to get too much done, and plan on everyone stopping to talk to you about the twins!

  • I'm in the same place as you are!  I sort of plan to take them in their stroller if I need to get out and get a few things.  If I need more than that, I will likely wait until my husband is home.  Like you, I will figure it out and end up doing what works best.  Thanks for the post!  This was great for me, too!

  • If I didn't need much, I could put one carseat in the top of the cart (like where a bigger kid would sit) -- my carseats are the Graco SnugRide 30s, and they will snap in.  Then the other one I would put in the big part of the basket.  This leaves you with very little room for the stuff you're going to buy, but the stroller hooks are a great idea for that!

The fussier kid goes on the top part so I can tend to him if necessary.  One kid in a carrier works great too, and then you have a bit more room for stuff.

My boys are now 6 months old and I do most of my shopping alone while DH or my mom watches them.  It's just quicker and easier, and then they get a real nap instead of a half-hearted, distracted nap while we're out and about.

My one piece of advice-- be ready to tell people not to touch them!  It's amazing what people will do without asking.  You've got to be ready to say "please don't touch them since it's cold and flu season" or something like that.  I was surprised by it the first time and didn't know what to do!

  • I agree with the PP about the no touching thing...you'd be amazed about how many people think it's ok to touch your babies.  I used to leave the boys in their carseats in the cart...one in the basket and one up top in the childseat but usually turned sideways.  Don't fear going out, once you get the hang of it you'll be going everywhere.  GL!

  • When they were both in infant seats, I used the DSNG and, when they got a little older, I used the BJCS (which I still use today). I"m kind of a germaphobe and not into carts (even with the cart covers) so I just get whatever fits under the stroller/in reusable shopping bags.

It's not safe to put car seats on top of the cart, even if it clicks in.

  • At that age, I would just use our DSNG to the mall and such.  For trips to Target (and other shopping car stores), I would put one in large basket, and the other where a baby sits.  Actually, I think both fit sideways in the large basket (at least my PP carseats did).  Once I did wear one and had the other in the cart, but wasn't a huge fan of wearing him.
