How long to keep up 3 day wait rule?

We are very careful at this point to wait three days after introducing a new food before trying another. When is this not such a big deal anymore?

  • I didnt wait three days. I went one day and if he didnt have a reaction, moved onto the next food. I am currently only doing veggies/fruits. Most likely if they have a reaction it will be evident soon after they eat

  • I never did. I went 2 days. Which is as long as a jar of baby food lasts us. Smudge eats about half a jar at every meal.

  • I said I was going to wait a week and that got old fast.  I don't know why if a baby is going to have a reaction it takes a week of eating the food 1-3 times per day for that to occur?  Honestly, she gets something new all the time now.  If nothing happens after she eats it the first time, it's old news.  Since Saturday I've given her pears, peas and squash for the first time.  Really, who's allergic to squash?  I will still stay away from the more allergen prone foods like strawberries, honey, eggs, milk, nuts, etc. for quite a while.

  • It can take more than one exposure to react if there is an allergy, which is why the recommend feeding a new food a few times in a row. The 3 day wait part of it is so that if there is a reaction you can easily identify which food caused it. If you introduce 6 new things at once and there's a reaction, it's harder to figure out which one is the issue.

I run through all the basic grains, fruits and veg's doing a 2-3 day wait, and as long as we get through those with no reaction I stop with the wait until we intro high allergens. I wait a few days in between things like peanut butter, strawberries, eggs.

  • We never followed that.  I didn't even think anyone recommended that anymore.

  • We don't wait at all. We have no history of allergies in the family and are doing BLW.

  • If your LO has allergies you have to wait. My DD has severe allergies and most of the reactions she's had occurs after three exposures. Our allergist has us on a 5 day rule but to be honest when she has a reaction it takes close to a week for her system to go back to normal. So far the list of foods she's allergies too is longer than what she can eat.
