Trying to Get Pregnant

Honest question about # of cycles before getting PG

I am asking this question out of genuine curiosity and truly do not mean to offend anyone who has been TTC for a long time - I've noticed a few posts where ladies wish a short stay on the TTGP board to newbies.  So it got me wondering - Are there a decent amount of ladies who come on this board and only try for, say, 1-4 cycles and then get their BFP?  I don't expect anyone to have actual stats on this, but I'm curious, because my OB said to expect 6-8 months, but then other resources I read say a year is totally normal.  So I just expected it to be, well, HARD for me to get pregnant.  But then the overly emotional part of me reads into someone wishing someone else a "short" stay on the TTGP board and I start to wonder if that happens often here?

Re: Honest question about # of cycles before getting PG

  • A healthy couple, even with ideal timing, has a 20% chance of conceiving in any one cycle.  So if you have 100 couples trying to get pregnant, about 20 of them will be successful in their first cycle.

That being said, DH and I were successful our first cycle conceiving #1 (all I did was monitor my CM and we had sex EOD during that week).  Not as lucky this time around, we're on cycle #2 at the moment and aware it could take up to a year, especially since I am breastfeeding our son and that is throwing my cycles out of whack.

I think everyone wants a short stay on TTGP.

Yes, it's normal for a lot of the population to get pregnant in their first few cycles.  Like you said, up to a year is still normal and not indicative of something wrong with you or your H.

It took me (I think) 17 cycles to get pregnant with my DD.

This.  With our son, it took 22 cycles.  Trying for #2, I lost cycle count, but it's been 15 months.

    I'm on cycle #3 now.

  • I am moving on to cycle #7.  AF will arrive today or tomorrow.  I agree with one of the PP's though, I think girls start posting here (other than the obnoxious drive-by's) regularly once they have been trying for more than a month or two.  Personally, I started lurking right away, and didn't start posting until a month or two ago, and we've been TTC since october.  Huh?

But, I will say yes...the majority move on after the first 1-4 months but things are a bit different here as I think lots of people come here because they weren't successful right off the bat.

Yes  This board might be a little biased for longer stays.  Some women come here in the beginning of their journey (like I did), but some come here after it's taken them awhile.  By going to 1st tri, you'll probably get a broader range of women.

  • I agree with PPs that people tend to seek out this board after they've tried a few cycles and be unsuccessful. I came to the board once I started having trouble with long, anovulatory cycles and had to take Provera. Despite many google searches, I could not find the answers to my questions. I came here for support and information. I found both.

  • With DD it took 4 cycles. This time around, I started hanging out here while I was still TTA and then ended up with a BFP our first cycle trying, but it ended in a m/c. Now I'm back and hoping we get as lucky the 3rd time around as we did with the first two BFPs. There are plenty here who move on quickly.

    • Just 25% of couples actively trying to conceive become pregnant the first cycle.

? 60% become pregnant in the first six months of trying to conceive.

? 75% of couples become pregnant within nine months.

? 90% of couples experience pregnancy within 18 months.

  • To answer your first question, yes, there are a decent number of ladies who come to the board and get their BFPs right away. I thought I would be one of them, but, unfortunately, that's not the case.

Is there any particular reason you expected for it to be hard to get pregnant?

FWIW, I am on the tail end of month 22 with about 12 cycles in there. I have never been pregnant.

  • I took 2 cycles the first time I got my BFP.  It took 3 cycles the second time I got a BFP. It took 7 cycles the third time. In all it has been 2 1/2 years since we started.... no end in sight.

I think the average is 6 months...so about half will get BFPs before 6 months and the other half will take longer. But there are lots of factors that come in to play. You just never know where you'll fit.

There is no particular reason - From what I can tell, DH and I are both healthy adults - we stay active, eat relatively healthy, no major health issues or infertility in our families - but I guess I just hear a lot that you shouldnt expect to get PG right away (as in 1-4 cycles) because you're just setting yourself up for disappointment.

That being said, I think what I've gathered from all the responses to this thread is maybe my thoughts are/have been skewed by the fact that those who populate this board (and others like it on other sites) are usually those who have been trying for a while.

I wanted to add to what other PP's have said that it is really different for everyone. For me it was the following:

BFP #1 was cycle #2 actually charting CM ect but not temping. (m/c)

BFP #2 was cycle # 7 charting and temping (m/c)

BFP #3 was cycle #8 charting and temping, I got pg the next cycle after m/c. So that is where I am right now.
