We got a leapster, which is a game console, for our 4 year old nephew. He does well with it. The leapster was too expensive to give to someone who was not our own child. It's definitely too advanced for DS, who's 2y9m.
I think it's too advanced for a 2 yr old.We bought it for my 5 yr old son for xmas,he mostly just plays the games on it.But now my 3 yr old likes to play with it,but he just plays pet pals and does the art studio, and he likes the camera on there. But he doesn't know how to do the games or anything yet.
LO got one for Christmas (she was right about 2 1/2). She loves it but mostly plays the videos, not the games, though she does love Pet Pad (one of the free ones). Honestly, though, I wish I'd gotten her a Kindle Fire and a nice case. I have a Fire (just a leather case, nothing overly kid proof and a good screen protector) and she's very reliable with it. She plays games a lot, and the apps for the Fire are free or maybe $2 compared to $10-20 on the LeapPad. Plus it's rechargeable and the LeapPad eats batteries. The Leappad is about $100 and the Fire is close to $200 but I think the Fire is probably cheaper in the long run, and does so much more including putting movies on it. It doesn't have a camera though.
Awesome suggestion...Thank you so much!

DD has a Leappad & an Innotab - she does fine with both, she received them for Christmas. Most of the cartridge games are a little much for her but she loves the ebooks, the videos, the coloring, etc.
I was thinking of getting DS one for his 3rd birthday but after I looked at the price I didn't think it was worth it yet. I'm not sure he'd really get it so we're going to wait until he's 4.
My DD got a LeapPad a few months ago. She got a hang of the games pretty quickly, but she wouldn't have been ready for it even 6 months ago. My DS, who was 2 in February, is in no way ready for it.
He does love watching his sister play though!

Best purchase EVER! DD loves hers and uses it daily. It's especially helpful in a restaurant when she's done and the rest of us are finishing up, etc. I like it because it is a lot more durable than an iphone or ipad. She played with it the first day we got it and figured out how to play the videos and paint pictures on her own. She loves listening to the stories and taking pictures/videos. A few of the games I played with her the first few times and now she can do it on her own. I think it's a great resource. As an elementary school teacher in primary grades I have seen kids struggle with penmanship; the trace the letters game is great because it works on not only how the letter looks, but the proper start and end point to form letters. I was definitely nervous about whether or not it would be worth it, but it was. LO#2 even knows how to use some of the apps and he's only 17months. The Leappad does a great job making learning fun and incorporating modern technology. Just my opinion We got it for Christmas when she was 2y3m.
Only thing is it isn't rechargeable and eats batteries. There is an adapter, but I think DD is too young for the concept of having something plugged in while she plays.
