Swaddling -- wish I could have taken a picture!

So the girls are now just over 4 months old and we're still swaddling for naps and nighttime. I asked our pedi at their last wellness appointment when we should stop and he said, "when they don't like it anymore." I still figure we'll definitely have to stop when they're rolling back to tummy for safety reasons. But it might have to be sooner than we thought...

DH went to get Izzy when the girls woke up for their middle of the night feeding, and she had both arms and one leg out of the Miracle Blanket! The MBs been so good to us so far, but these little Houdinis can get themselves out of anything. DH wraps them really snug, way more snug than I do for naps, and she still wiggled herself out.

So, my question is, did anyone have good experiences getting rid of the swaddle cold turkey? I've tried the one arm out transitions and they have such a hard time falling asleep, and even harder of a time staying asleep. But maybe we'll have to just go through a couple of bad nights/weeks to get them sleeping without a swaddle?

  • I used the Halp sleepsacks with the swaddle until about 4 months. That's when they started wiggling their arms out. After that, we just started using the regular sleepsacks without the swaddle. I just ordered the bigger size, and when I got it, I guess we just started using them...cold turkey. They didn't seem to notice.

  • We stopped swaddling cold turkey.  They were breaking out and I was afraid that they would suffocate with the swaddle blanket.  We went through 3-5 nights of bad sleep (sorry, that time is fuzzy) but after that they were fine and went back to sleeping through the night.  We stopped swaddling around 4 months.

  • we had to keep swaddling for a while, the only thing that worked was wrapping them in a flannel blanket and then a swaddle blanket over the top.  the flannel blanket kept them from moving and the velcro swaddle held it all in place.  otherwise they wouldnt sleep.

If you don't mind me asking, how long did you swaddle? I feel like when they can roll over, they'll be more comfortable and able to sleep in the crib, but I just don't know. We might just have to test it out and possibly not sleep for a week. Ahhh!

  • I kept my son swaddled till he was well over 1, i bought him this thing called a woombie and it was a god send. it looks like a little peanut and you zip them into it but it is stretchy. When he started to roll over i brought it to the doctors with us and the pediatrician looked at him in it an because of the stretchyness of it he could push himself up if need be.

  • Until somewhere between 6 and 7 months. We tried a couple times before then and it didn't work, and then we tried then and it was totally fine.
  • Ours are 6 months, we tried quitting the swaddle around 5 months because they were starting to roll over.  One baby did fine cold turkey, the other one SCREAMED, would not sleep, and is therefore still being swaddled.  I know we'll have to get him off it at some point but they've been sick nonstop and waking up a lot (after STTN!).  I just can't deal with something that's going to make their sleep even worse than it already is right now!

The one who's still swaddled can totally roll himself around even while swaddled, and move his head, so I'm not worried about suffocation risk (also, there's nothing in the crib to suffocate on).  He's gotten to be a houdini since getting stronger though, we now have to double swaddle him, he can get out of the miracle blanket in 2.5 seconds.
