Recommend a sling/carrier for toddlers AND newborns?

We already have an Ergo which I love, but I'm looking for a sling-style carrier that I can use to carry my little girl more comfortably on my hip.  I'd also like something that works for newborns so I could keep it for bub #2.  And no tying, just something that I can throw around my shoulder basically.

I had my eye on a K'tan, but otherwise do you have a brand that you love?

  • i dont think ktan will work with a toddler.

i love my maya wrap for a little baby but also for an older one.

  • Maybe a ring sling?  I love mine from Sleeping Baby Productions, but I didn't get it until she was about 6 mo, so I don't have experience using it w/a newborn.

  • My Maya wrap RS was my favorite for hip carries with DD up until I was too pregnant to be comfortable and it has gotten more use than the Moby with DS since it's quicker, but I find it uncomfortable after about an hour due to the weight distribution. Then again I think that's the downfall of a hip carry in general, at least in my experience.

I also agree I don't think the K'tan would work well with a toddler.

  • A friend of mine uses a K'tan for her toddler and seems to think it's great, which is what had me thinking of that.  Thanks for the replies so far.  :)
  • A woven wrap fits the bill for comfort, but obviously needs to be tied, so I guess that is out. A Maya wrap (ring sling) may fit the bill--they are great quality, you can get the padded shoulder, etc. That said, asymetrical carries with a toddler are only sustainable for so long.

Would you consider a high-quality mai tai? (Cheaper ones tend to be smaller, which won't hold a toddler). You could back carry your toddler and then use it for your NB with either legs in or with a ribbon tying the crotch area to make it smaller.

I'll be honest--a Ktan doesn't make sense to me. It is stretchy and stretchy just tends to get saggy with even a 15lb baby, let alone a toddler who weighs double that.

  • I know you wanted more of a sling but what about the beco Gemini? It can also do newborns. I had a balboa but didn't care for it so I returned it.

  • I really like my Sakura Bloom RS.  I have a double-layer so it's supportive enough for DS, and it'll also work for DS #2 when he arrives in September.

The Gemini is really too narrow for a toddler.

I would go with a really supportive RS. A Sakura Bloom double linen or silk is a wonderful sling. I've used my SB's with my 30 lb toddler no issue & even though that level of support isn't necessary for a newborn, it's not hurting anything.

Most mei tai's & SSCs aren't really good for both extremes of baby size - the toddlers need a wider + taller body, but the newborn will be swallowed up in that carrier. Wraps can go both ways but you said you want something quick, which I totally agree with for a toddler. I'm a wrap lover but rarely wrap anymore & haven't much since Ari was 18-24 months.

ETA: I had a Ktan & stopped using it @ 12 lbs. It was way more trouble than what it's worth. I can't imagine using it with a toddler - that doesn't even sound safe. It's hot too. A RS is much easier & will suit your support needs much better.
