Am I the only one who has to lay with them in bed until they fall asleep? I don't mind it, necessarily - I'm able to get a little rest but am wondering if this is common.

No, I lay with each of my girls and read their books with them but then I give them a kiss goodnight and tell them I'm going to MY bed as I'm tired...which I usually am. They then put themselves to sleep.

DS only sleeps in a regular bed when we go to our condo at the lake. I did lay down with him when we went. I am afraid he will get out and wander around the room and I won't know because we don't take the monitor. I ended up falling asleep and woke up hours later..

We do not lay with DD till she falls asleep. She would never fall asleep if we were there. She falls asleep on her own. I can't imagine having to do that....
We are on day 2 of toddler bed...I just laid with him for 45 minutes until he fell asleep...please tell me this gets better!
Not for me, so far. He's been in his bed a month. Sometimes it takes 30 minutes, sometimes 90 minutes. I'm going to try the thing where you sit by the bed, then slowly move out of the room over a period of weeks. Not yet, though - We're moving soon and I plan to wait until we're moved and adjusted.

One of us lies with Ella until she falls asleep most nights. Some nights she is fine with us leaving, most she is not. DH takes his phone or psp and gets some quiet time once she closes her eyes and is drifting but it's quite asleep.
We never had to do that, but we did allow her to just sit and read in her bed for a few minutes on her own before bed each night. That usually calmed her down enough so that she would go to sleep after we went in and took the books away. We always told her she had "x" amount of minutes to read though. When we were at the in-laws at the beginning of the month I would lay with her until she slept, but that was because it was a strange house, new bed, and she was downstairs and we would go back upstairs after she was asleep! At home now we just let her sing or talk to her stuffed animals until she goes to sleep. She knows not to get out of bed and for the most part doesn't!

We transitioned DD to a regular bed about a month ago. We were laying with her until she fell asleep in the beginning. Now, we're laying with her for a little while and then leaving the room and she falls asleep on her own. We feel like we're taking little steps and making progress.

Sometimes DD2 begs me to "suggle", and I'll curl up with her for a few minutes, but I've only stayed in bed once until she fell asleep.
Mostly it's a challenge to get her to settle and stay in bed, since she'd rather jump on her big sister (they share a room), ask for more water, throw books, etc. Eventually she gets there, and sometimes snuggling up with her helps. Other times it just means she makes me into a distraction to keep herself awake. :P
I had a coworker who's wife still lays with their daughters until they fall asleep every night...and they are pushing 4 and 5 yrs old. Didn't want to start down that road, so we only sit on the bed to read some books and sing some songs before tucking her in and saying goodnight. Only if DD's really sick or having a bad night (teething, nightmares, etc) will one of us hang out in her room with her for a bit to sooth her back to sleep.
We worked relly hard when DS was still in his crib of putting him down tired but awake.
Now we have a routine (kinda long) but its the same for naps and bed. Then he has his lovely and small blanket. Sometimes he goes to sleep right away sometimes I hear him talking for 20 mintues. As long as he isnt crying I let him be. But I'm luckly that he stays in bed until we get him. We also have to tell him that its nap time (or bedtime) and whoever is in the house (we have to go through names) is going to bed too. So mommy is going night-night, grandma is going nightnigt. the dog is going night-night. Sometimes he asks about his other toys- yep they are all going night-night too.
However DH sometimes lays down for a couple minutes. But once i went in there an hour later and found them both asleep. Another time DH was snoring and DS just looked up a me not knowing what to do.
DS has been in his "big boy bed" for about a month.

Same here. He would be so distracted with me there. Not to mention, and this may sound selfish, but 45 minutes is cutting way into "me" time!
He's been falling asleep on his own since 5 months.
