Bug repellant?

DD2 has really bad reactions to bug bites.  Last fall she got one, her whole arm turned bright red, swelled and 2 weeks later, a red circle showed up around the bite.  The doctor looked at it and said sometimes kids have bad reactions to bites.  She still has scars all over her arm from scratching it.  Now the other night, she apparently got another bug bite (isn't 50 degrees too cold for biting bugs???). The area is swollen and she has been scratching it (through long sleeves).  Now it has a bunch of tiny bumps on it, like poison ivy.  I put some kind of anti-itch stuff on it but I really need to find something to put on the kid to prevent the bites.  I would prefer something like a bracelet but will go with spray or lotion if I really have to.  Suggestions?

  • I like that Cutter Lemon Eucalyptus Oil spray.  She'll smell like a citronella candle, but it's supposed to be better for you.

I don't really think those wrist bands work - but it can't hurt.

You also want to make sure that she's not allergic to the anti-itch stuff you're using.  It took me a LONG time to figure out that I'm allergic to antibiotic creams.  I was always putting it on cuts and thinking that the cut was getting infected with these little tiny bumps.  But, it turns out the little bumps were an allergic reaction to the neosporin or bacatracin.  Try putting a patch on a spot where she doesn't have a bug bite - just to make sure.

  • We used the bracelet when we took DS camping.  It was effective but the one we bought only lasedt a short time - I think 8 hours, if I remember correctly and they were pretty expensive.
