Hey Bumpies,
My husband and I are considering the name Liev for a boy, but we would like to pronounce it as LEAVE. So far I've found that the name Liev is actually correctly pronounced as either LEE-EV or LEV. Do you think it would be okay to spell it as Liev and pronounce it as LEAVE. If not, can you offer a more appropriate spelling?
Many thanks for your help!
Re: Spelling Help
BeagleBub,
I do not want to have his name constantly mispronounced. That is why I posted this question. Your reply was not helpful.
I would have said it like Leave, but I have never seen/heard this name before.
With that said, if Leave is not the correct way to say it, I would go with a different name.
Honestly, no.
The name will always be mispronounced if it is spelled Liev or Lev.
If you spell it Leev it will look weird and people will always spell it wrong. Sorry.
I would keep looking. What about Levi?
Taking a name and pronouncing it any other way than the correct way would just cause a lot of grief for your future child.
And making up a new spelling would be just as bad.

Yeah, I feel like if the actual pronunciation doesn't work for you (with any name), then the name isn't right for you.
What about Lief?
I was thinking Lief as a good option too.
I don't think there's a perfect solution, like what you're asking for. If you want it Liev and pronounce it Leave, people will mispronounce it often. I would NOT use cre8tiv spelling, bc at that point its a weird made up name i would just get ready to correct people if you're set on Liev/leave. Personally, I like Lee-Ev better, pronunciation wise, but that's neither here nor there.
Good luck with your decision.

This would be like naming your child Lily but calling her L-eye-lee
It doesn't work and people will notice.
Is there significance to the name Leave that you are trying to work with? Liev is a beautiful name with the correct pronunciation and Levi is a nice alternative.
I pronounced it LEAVE before I knew what it was. lol. I love the name!
THIS. A thousand times THIS.
No, not the same "Stein" isn't of Russian origin. "Liev" is...it means "lion-like." You don't pronounce "Chicken Kiev" as "chicken KEEVE." It's "key-ev". Names of Russian/slavic origin are pronouned a certain way. You may know people who pronouce that "LEAVE" but it's an incorrect pronunciation.
This was my first thought too! I'm pretty sure I've only heard his name pronounced "leave". Maybe it is Lee-Ev but everyone says it fast and it just sounds like leave?
Liev Shcrieber is HOT. (leave)
And I love Banana Hammocks.
I would like to name my son Declan, but I would like everyone to pronounce it "Richard" please!
Yeah.
**snort** :-)
Bingo. I don't see the appeal in that name AT ALL, and I certainly wouldn't go trying to make a name that doesn't exist (pronunciation wise) fit into the spelling for one that does.

I agree with this.
Jeez, today's my first trip to the baby name board...people are ruthless!
No matter what you name your baby, people will get used to it and it will become normal to all of his friends and family. For the record, I heard "Leave" in my head when I first read it.
Okay, but really, I just saw your screen name and wanted to suggest "Crap Bag" instead. Teehee. (Everyone else will think I'm a jerk, but hopefully that will make you smile;)
