DH and I are meeting with a potential HBMW tomorrow to possibly make the switch over in care. I've done some google searches, but what are important questions I should be asking them?
Keeping my fingers crossed that this works out and we can move forward with a new birth plan!
Re: Meeting w/ a HB MW tomorrow... what to ask?
What complications would cause her to transfer you to an OB before delivery? (GD, pre-E, etc)
What complications would cause her to transfer to a hospital during delivery?
Does she have experience with breech babies? What would she do if your LO was breech at delivery?
What interventions is she prepared to do at home? Does she carry oxygen? Pitocin in case of hemorrhage?
At what point in labor will she come to your house? Some MWs come at the first sign of active labor and hang out, others prefer to leave you be until close to transition. A "good answer" here depends on what you're comfortable with and want/need from your provider.
What tests will she perform throughout the rest of your pregnancy? (GTT, GBS, etc)
What is her protocol if you are GBS+?
Things that quickly come to mind...
-What is your training?
-Tell me about your philosophy of birth
-What are the state's requirements for your position? (CPM requirements vary. They are even are illegal in some states, some women care others don't) Per the state, is there anything that are you not allowed to do?)
-How many births have you attended?
-What is your transfer rate and what are the reasons (planned c-section for needed reason vs. maternal exhaustion vs. desire for pain meds vs .life and death thing are all very different)
-Do you have references that I can contact?
-What does prenatal care look like? Care during the birth? Post-partum care? Breastfeeding support?
-What sorts of things would risk me out of your care?
-Do you deliver breech babies? (If you would want to try this at home)
-Do you do water birth? How would we get a tub?
-Do you suggest a doula? A birth assistant?
-What are your fees?
-How do I get lab work or ultrasounds done (if desired)?
