Success after IF

XP: IVF after multiple ectopics...success stories?

Hi everyone. I've suffered 3 ectopic pregnancies leading to a broken heart and lots of numbness. I am beyond terrified of going through IVF just to end in another ectopic (if it even works). Anyone here suffer from multiple ectopic pregnancies and have success with IVF?

I'm sorry if this question has been asked before...I'm feeling a little desperate for some inspiration today. TIA!

Re: XP: IVF after multiple ectopics...success stories?

  • I haven't had multiple ectopics, but I had one.  I got pg the first month we tried and we found out it was ectopic at about 12 weeks (Dec 2008).  I got methotrexate twice, but my tube ruptured anyway and I had emergency surgery (Jan 2009).  I lost my other tube to a benign tumor in Jan 2003 and our only option was IVF.  IVF#1 brought us our twins and 3 frozen embies.  The RE did check my "horns" (where my tubes used to be) to make sure the pg hadn't implanted there.  I guess there was a small worry about a partial ectopic.  Thankfully, both babies were where they were supposed to be.

I wish you all the best!  I'm sorry you have had to deal with so much :(

  • Hi, I had at least 4 ectopics.  It was awful.  for 2 of the ectopics I had to do the methotrexate shots.  2 of them just sort of fizzled out on their own.  My RE kept telling me to do IVF but I was so paralized with fear that I put it off for so long.  I finally decided to give it a chance and got pg on my first IVF cycle.  Every day for 9 months I was terrified.  I didn't even talk about being pregnant until I was about 7 months along.  I seriously had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from the ectopics.

Let me know if you have any questions...

  • MZANS - Thank you so much!  I'm so sorry for your horrible experiences.  Ectopics are a horrible nightmare that I would wish on no one.  I was told after my 2nd ectopic was confirmed that I should do IVF, but after an HSG showed my remaining tube was open and the fact that when I had my lap done to remove my tube, they said my other tube looked healthy I was reluctant.  After another failed pregnancy and a second round of methotrexate, I was D.O.N.E...done.  My mom said I should keep on trying, but I couldn't do it with the odds stacked against me and three doctors telling me to do IVF.  I'm very frightened starting this journey, but hearing a story like yours gives me hope.  Thank you!

  • I know...and then after the methotrexate shot you have to wait even longer to try again.  If you want to talk, I'll PM you my e-mail address.  It sounds like our stories are very similar.

I'm so sorry for what you've gone through.  I only had one ectopic that was successfully treated with mtx.  That had happened after we'd been TTC for 3+ years and I'd just had a lap.  We went straight to IVF to minimize the chance of another ectopic and we were successful times 2.

However, I have a friend that had at least 2 ectopics, with at least one requiring emergency surgery.  They were successful with their first IVF (twins) and she is currently pregnant from her first FET, so 3 babies from two transfers and no ectopics. :-)  Good luck to you!   While IVF seems daunting, it isn't that bad once you get into it.

  • I am so sorry for your losses. I had one ectopic treated with methotrexate and one suspected ectopic that resolved on its own. An HSG exam discovered that both tubes were hydrosalpinx and I had both removed prior to doing IVF. We got pregnant on our 3rd cycle (2nd fresh cycle) with our twins. Best of luck!

  • I had 2 ectopic pregnancies.  Had surgery for both.  The 2nd ectopic actually caused one of my tubes to rupture leaving me with one tube.  HSG determined that the one tube is (to quote a fertility specialist) "severely torqued".  Because of this he strongly recommended NOT TTC naturally since after each ectopic your chances of having another increases 10 to 15% or something like that so that if we TTC naturally he could almost guarantee that it would result in another ectopic.  He recommended that we proceed with IVF and gave us a list of REs.  Our first IVF resulted in DS.  I just had my FET last Wednesday.
2nd ectopic resulted in loss of tube. HSG revealed remaining tube is "severely torqued".
