Considering the name Luke...but here's the deal...

My husbands brother has a girfriend, they have a kids together and she has other kids too (not from my BIL). One of her kids name is Lucas. What do you think? I really dont like the idea of having 2 kids in the same famiy with such close names but then again that child really isnt "in" our family. Maybe one day he will be though. What do you think? Too close?

Up to you!  Obviously that is a risk you take as that child already exists and there is potential for that relationship to continue.

I love the name Luke but it is EVERYWHERE.  I know many many baby Lukes (at least 5 under 2 in my social circle) and in my DD's preschool class of 7 kids there are 2 Lukes. 

So it won't just be the Lucas who could potentially be in your family - there will be a lot of little Lukes running around the play groups and preschools too.  If it is important to not be one of several then I would reconsider the name.

I don't think it's a big deal at all.  My father's family recycled names like crazy so there were several same name cousins and it was never confusing.

I think it's too close, unfortunately. That's too bad...Luke is our #1 boy name so obviously I love it.

One of my closest two friends has a son named Luke.  I therefore can't seem to feel ok with some of the Lucas, Luca, Lucian names, that come up even though I might like some of them because it's way too close for comfort.

I think you could definitely use Luke if you knew it wouldn't be a big deal to you, but it all depends on how comfortable you feel about it.
