Milk supply

Any tips for ways to get in the appropriate calories in a healthful way?  I feel like I am struggling to get in an appropriate amount of calories without eating junk.  I try to grab and handful of almonds, cheese, etc and other healthy fats, but looking for other suggestions as well.

Re: Milk supply

  • Those first few months were just survival. I was famished and felt like I was constantly stuffing my face.  Yet the pounds were dropping off so fast.

If you can premake a bunch of healthy stuff you can just grab, that would be my suggestion. Maybe a quinoa salad with avocado, tomatoes, cheese, etc

String cheese is fast and a good snack. Apples with peanut butter.  Almonds like you've been doing are great.  Hard boiled eggs you can do ahead of time, peel and seal in a tupperware.

Good luck! I ate a lot of junk because it was fast but tried to focus on healthy meals.  I did have some Kashi granola bars taht weren't too bad and had good protein.  Greek yogurt, and these frozen bean burritos from Costco were a staple lunch.

  • My appetite has been so poor and I spend so much time in the NICU I just eat whatever is handy/sounds good.  I think your ideas are all great ones.

  • Eat whatever you can, whenever you can. When I was working with an LC I was having a hard time eating when I was really sick with mastitis and she said your body can still produce milk without a tons of calories but to keep the fluids flowin in at all costs! Maybe juices can solve both problems? 100% juice is calories dense (although mostly from sugar, yes) but also serves the purpose of getting lots of fluids in. And really, if you indulge in junk food for a few weeks until life gets organized a bit, ENJOY IT!

  • Thanks, ladies!  I am hoping this will help keep my supply up as it is barely meeting our needs now.

  • Oy. I remember those days. I ate a lot of trail mix, also had lots of stuff that I could throw into a salad pre-cut in tupperware. That way I wasn't eating the same thing all the time but I could get something healthy quickly. So I had the usual lettuce, cucumber, carrot, broccoli etc but also stuff like nuts, seeds, cooked salmon, asparagus, quinoa, cheese, avocado... whatever to make it more interesting :)
