Cloth Diapering

I need to stop...also inserts question

I really need to stop buying cloth diapers, lol. Fairytaledeals has a sale on fuzzibunz today so I bought a couple more, plus inserts and CD safe diaper cream that they had up there (had to buy 6 items to get the free shipping). It's at the point where I have bought so many CD's this past week various places online, I'm not even sure how many I've bought!! DH is gonna kill me, lol.

A question about inserts though. I'm not really understanding the difference between microfleece, bamboo and hemp and when to use each. Also how many of each should I have on hand?

 Thanks!

Re: I need to stop...also inserts question

  • It is really personal preference when to use each.

Depending on what you have purchased, you can determine what you like, what is working for you, and what works when. Microfiber is a synthetic material that absorbs a good amount, but absorbs quite quickly. Most pocket diapers come with a microfiber insert, and many aio diapers have microfiber in them as well. A potential con is that because it is synthetic, it can hold stink. I have never had a problem with this.

Hemp holds a lot, is a bit slower to absorb, but is quite trim because it holds so much. It can be stiff.

Bamboo absorbs fairly quickly, is very soft, and holds agood amount of moisture. My bamboo takes a while to dry, for some reason. My favorite is a bamboo/hemp blend.

For us, I stuff my pockets with microfiber, but add a hemp doubler or hemp/bamboo blend double if we will be out if the house for awhile. I occasionally use this combo at night, too, but with 2natural fiber doublers pkus the microfiber, but I have a heavy wetter. I usually use a bamboo fitted, with a couple natural fiber doubkers or inserts added, with a wool cover.

  • I forgot to say that if you are using more than one insert, you would put the microfiber closest to baby inside a pocket since it absorbs the most quickly, but microfiber cannot actually touch baby. The natural fibers are okay to touch baby's skin, but the microfiber could potentially dry it out, or cause a rash.

thank you, I didn't know this! So microfiber inserts can only be placed in a pocket but the hemp or bamboo are ok to touch baby's skin? I guess if we were to use a disposable liner between baby's skin and the microfiber insert that would be ok too?
