Re: Do you like "Libby" as a first name?

  • I like it as a NN for Elizabeth. DH said no.

  • My brother (for a while, though I think my SIL vetoed the idea) wanted to name his daughter Liberty and call her Libby for short. I thought it was a great idea--I love the idea of Liberty as a name because it's very strong in its meaning even though it's not normally a name.

And though Libby seems more like a nickname to me, and I wouldn't pick it as a first name, I still think that's it a cute name, and wouldn't think less of anyone for picking it as a first name (without being a nickname.)

    So yes, I like it.

  • I said no, but I was thinking as the given name.  If it is a nickname then it's fine.

  • As a nn for Elizabeth or Liberty I love it. As a fn, not so much.

  • I have a student this year named Elizabeth and only goes by Libby. Before knowing her, I wouldn't have liked it, but she is PRECIOUS!  I agree with PPs--nickname and not fn.

  • Libby = convicted felon Scooter Libby

Definitely NMS, even as a nn.

This. I never thought about it either way until I became friends with a Libby (her full name is Elizabeth)

  • I went to school with sibset Libby & Abby. It drive them nuts that teachers would call them Elizabeth and Abigail. Interestingly, their brother was Michael, not Mike. Anyhoo...I think everyone got over that. I keep in touch with Libby and she hasn't really had problems as an adult. I think that's due to Facebook and email addresses. You can kind of create your identity and everyone sticks to it.

  • I love the name Libby and would use it except for I would want it as a nickname.  Unfortunately it's the nickname for my name, Elizabeth, and I don't want to name my child after myself

  • No. Libby is an adorable nn, but you have to also consider later in life. When she's a professional, she may want to use Elizabeth. I'd definitely go with the full name and call her Libby.

  • It's my favorite nn for Elizabeth, and it's a big contender for us to use in the future. But I don't like nicknames as given names, so it's hard to answer your poll if her legal name will be Libby.

  • Love it and it can be a full name and not just a nickname. My DD is named Libbie, she was named after my grandma, who was named after her aunt. It is a different spelling than what you have proposed but from my research it was a somewhat popular first name from back in the 1800's. So far I have only met one other Libbie besides my Grandma and DD. Some people ask if she is and Elizabeth but mostly I only get compliments on her name :-)

  • I have a Libby, full name Elizabeth.  She's definitely a Libby and not even a little bit an Elizabeth, but I like that if she wants a professional name as an adult, she has one.
