I was a lurker months ago and took a break from the bump, facebook etc anything having to do with baby anything! My husband and I are now meeting with an RE and doing initial testing.
We've been trying since 11/10. My husband's SA was normal, CD 3 bloodwork was normal for me and I ovulate regular (based on charting). The clinic we are going to is scheduling an hysteroscopy for me this cycle. I've always seen on here that woman usually get an HSG, is there a difference or benefit to one over the other? I'm reading the instructions they have for the HSC and it says you can't have intercourse for two weeks following the surgery?? So this cycle would be completely out for us...and I'm given anesthesia so I can't go back to work.
I'm feeling so anxious about this because I thought I would just be having a simply procedure for them to see if my tubes were open etc. and I just don't know what to think about this. Any thoughts? Has anyone had an HSC?
Thank you!
Re: HSC vs HSG? Questions
Hmmm..this is interesting. So there are 2 different types of hysterscopies, exploratory and operative. I've had both. For the exploratory, they just inject some saline into your uterus and then use a camera to kind of look around. It is not painful and you are totally awake for this. The operative sounds like what you're having. You go under anesthesia and they perform the same thing with the saline and camera, but they also usually do something surgical like remove a polyp or fibroid or something like that. Have you have had a polyp show up on an ultrasound? If so, then it makes sense you'd have an operative hysterscopy. But if not, then I think starting out with an operative hysterscopy is way overboard. I would be seriously hesitant to do this without good reason.
I 99% sure that a hysterscopy cannot tell if your tubes are open, you have to have the HSG done for that. The HSG will show whether dye flows through your tubes or if it get blocked up due to blocked tubes. I personally think an HSG should be done before a hysterscopy (unless you did have an abnormal ultrasound that showed a fibroid or polyp).
I assume you're seeing an RE? Can you talk with him/her about their reasoning for choosing an operative hysterscopy instead of exploratory and why they are doing it before having an HSG done? It just doesn't quite make sense to me, but I'm on a dr., so take what I say with a grain of salt!
