Cloth Diapering

A few questions about CDing from a FTM

I have a few questions for those of you that have been CDing.

Please pardon if some of these are "duh" questions but I want to be certain as I am totally new to this.

  1.  I have washed all the baby clothes, so, I assume I should wash all the covers, inserts and cloth wipes as well?
  2. Do you use anything specific to prep the cloth wipes? A certain spray, water, etc?
  3. Is the diaper sprayer a must-have, does it make a mess?
  4. I have seen so much about what to wash the diapers in - any amazing go to detergents? Should I only buy small amounts at first to determine if my baby reacts to a certain brand?
  5. How many diapers/inserts/cloth wipes do you put in your diaper bag for a 2hr trip? 4hr trip? Day trip?

    Thanks in Advance!

    • 1. Yes i would definitely wash all the diapers/wipes too

      2.  I have never really prepped cloth wipes, you don't really need them to absorb like you do the diaper, so I think just one wash to get them ready would be fine

      3.  Are you planning to breastfeed?  You don't need to do anything with breastmilk poop at all....just throw it in the wash and it rinses out.  If you are formula feeding (and once you start solids) you will want to do something with the poop, I do have  a diaper sprayer, but it's really a matter of preference, you could also just wipe the poop off with TP, or swish it in the toilet :)

       4. You may have to try several to see what works for you.  We use the Tide free and it works fine for us, but I have heard others say they have issues with it.

      5.  I usually take 4 diapers just in case, but this is something you will figure out once you get to know your baby's routine :)

For the newborn stage, I packed a diaper per hour to be safe. After a while it was a diaper per 2 hours.

      1. Formula poop IS water soluble just like breastfed babies.  Just throw it in the pail.  A sprayer is VERY NICE once your baby starts solids, they are messy at first but once you get used to it, it is no problem.  For diaper bag, 1 diaper per hour +1 to begin with as baby gets older, 1 every two hours +1.  Just wash wipes and inserts once.  (unless they are cotton, bamboo or hemp inserts, then they need a full prep of around 5 washes with full absorbency after 10 washes.)

      2. ooppss I forgot detergent.  I agree with your thought of getting a small box of detergent first to see if there is any reaction.  I actually bought 4 sample packets of each of 3 detergents to try them out.  I ended up using Charlies and Tiny Bubbles.
