April 2012 Moms

are you using a pacifier?

Are you using a pacifier on your baby?  If so, when did you/will you introduce it?  Are you breastfeeding or bottle feeding?  I tried to hold off on giving her one, but she was using my breast as a pacifier and my nipples were getting SO SORE...since giving it to her yesterday, she slept MUCH better last night and was MUCH calmer.  She doesn't use it all the time, just when she is fussy...so far it has been a huge help.  We are using the soothie.  Introduced it at 1 week of age.

Re: are you using a pacifier?

  • Edie was BF'd and we introduced at the hospital.  She never had nipple confusion and gave up her binky at 3mo when she got her first cold.  We tried all the pacifiers, but she'd only take a Soothie: image

Adeline is FF, and we also introduced in the hospital. She wasn't taking to the Soothies, so I went to Target and bought a bunch of other kinds.  She took to the MAM brand.  It didn't hurt that she's a St Paddy's day baby and theyhad one with a shamrock:  image

  • We FF and both babies love soothes. It's the brand the hospital gave us.

  • Odie is using one - since his circumcision at the hospital. My OB said there have been enough studies done to prove that pacifiers won't affect BFing like a bottle may.

It keeps him happy, which keeps us happy :)

  • Ansley is BF and we use the soothie. I had some Tommy Tippies, Dr Brown, and MAM...she hates them all. She's not a huge fan of the soothie either, but at night, if she's completely full, she'll use it. It's a good measure on whether she's hungry too. If we try and give it to her and she keeps opening super wide like it's a boob, she needs more food. Not sure where she puts all this milk! No nipple confusion either and we started it at 4 days. Pediatrician recommended.

  • Emma got her first paci (soothie) at the hospital, Ethan did too. We switched him to NUKs at a few weeks old and I assume will do the same this time too. Mams were his second favorite once we switched. We are EBF as well.

  • With Hazel she got a Soothie paci at the hospital right away. I was breastfeeding and it didn't interfere one bit. We tried to switch her to "regular" ones, by she wasn't having it. She still uses one for long car trips, naps and bed time and we will break it at 2. I didn't want to take it away before Owen because he would be change enough.
i wish i could be joking but my dad is the music teacher at a church so he owuld be mad. we had sex, all the time how bad i know but we dont want to wait and he said GREAT OH KAY! and I was really feeling the wets? down there- too embarsed to say- but he acted like man.
  • Soothies for us. It's the one one he will use. We took it with us to the hospital. Our hospital used something else ( looked like a Nuk style) and he hated it so they were happy to use what we brought. He doesn't use it all the time though.

  • Neither of my kids have been interested in pacis. Luckily DD is super calm though, so I haven't felt the need to push it. She'll suck on one if she is hungry and I am not able to attend to her right away, but that is about it. That's fine with me, one less battle to fight later!

  • DS had one in the NICU after he was born and I was worried he wouldn't latch but he latched on the breast like a pro even though I didn't see him for 9 hours after birth.  Since the hospital I didn't really give him a soother much... but recently started because he would root like he was hungry and if I put him on the breast he would just nibble and treat me like a soother.  So we started giving him a soother a couple days ago and it's been a godsend.  He has no nipple confusion.  He takes it and then spits it out as he falls asleep and he'll also spit it out if he's hungry.  I hoping he takes to a bottle well too!

  • :: ignore my ticker- she was two weeks yesterday ::

DD HATES all pacifiers! We tried to introduce earlier this week because she was pacifying at the boob and she hates them all! The soothes made her gag :( I feel like they are to big for her... They are all the smallest size available for each brand. We're going to keep trying here and there only because she won't always have the breast to pacify on. Also, I'm scared she won't take a bottle either... Which she'll need to eventually when I go back to work. If anybody has advice, feel free! I've tried when she's calm, fussy, awake and asleep. I've rubbed it on her lip and tried angling it upward. Nothing seems to work... I don't want to force it on her but like I said she won't always have the boob to comfort suck on and this makes me nervous for bottles..

  • We started Kenley on the soothie pacifiers after coming home from the hospital. She seems to take to them alright.

  • DD also uses a soothie. She won't always take it, but if she's tired she will.

  • We are waiting until 2wks to introduce one.  He liked the soothie at the hospital (used just during his circ and to get him happy for newborn pics), so we'll try that first.  I also ordered some from https://www.personalizedpacifiers.com/ since they are so freaking cute, and it was one of the only ones DS1 liked.

  • only during baths (otherwise she sucks on the towel) and occasionally when she's super tired but won't sleep. I've only given it to her a half dozen times, and it's been for less than 10 minutes each time. I use the NUKs I got as a gift.

  • We asked for one at the hospital. I felt guilty, because we were trying to bf, but she just wanted to suck on something all the time. Which I guess I should have expected due to the fact she was always sucking on her hands during ultrasounds. lol.

I don't know what kind it is. It looks like the same material as the soothie, but it's shaped differently.

ETA: oh, I guess it is a soothie. It looks like this.
