No sonogram during first appt?

Hi,

Im at 9 weeks on Monday and I have my first official appt. I did have a sonogram at 6 weeks because I had some bleeding- but all was fine.

So, my dr just called to confirm my Monday appt and apparently there will be no sonogram?  I was planning on bringing my hubby to hear the heartbeat.

Anyone else not have a sono at their first appt?  Thanks!

  • I'm supposed to have my first appointment Monday too, but I'm not sure if they will be doing a sonogram or not. I hope so!

  • Ultrasounds aren't typically given at every appointment. Some women get a dating ultrasound between 6-10 weeks. Then there is usually the optional NT Scan between 11-13 weeks and then the anatomy scan around 20 weeks. Many woman only get the anatomy scan. It really depends on your doctor! Any other scans are typically because of bleeding, as you experienced.

  • at my first appointment she just did the pelvic exam, the pap, some blood work and urine sample to confirm the pregnancy. At the end of the appt she scheduled me for an ultrasound for the next week.

I just went in last week for my monthly check ups and she used the doppler. so maybe you can bring your hubby and ask for the doppler and you might be able to hear the heartbeat together :)

i guess it really all depends on the doctor. With my doctor, i had ultrasounds til we saw a hb and now they wont do another one until 20 weeks unless something is wrong. hope this helps :)

  • I'm not having one.  I have an appt with the OB Coordinator at 7.5 weeks and an appt w/ the doctor at 10.5 weeks which is when I'll have an u/s.

  • I didn't have one at my 1st appointment. We did hear the heartbeat though via the doppler. I think we only get one u/s  (with our dr.)  at 20 weeks unless there is some kind of problem.
  • I didn't with DD.

  • My first "real" appointment with the doctor was just the physical, pelvic, breast exam, etc no sonogram.  She did listen to the baby's heartbeat with the doppler.  I was 10 1/2 weeks.

But like they say every doctor is different. I'm sure they will at least listen to the baby's heartbeat...they told me that would happen every appt but just with doppler. I haven't seen my little alien in there yet and twins run in the family and so hubby asked since she listened to one heartbeat if that meant it wasn't twins and she said "NO" I just I'll find out during my NT

  • Unless you are having complications or are considered high risk, they don't usually do an ultrasound at the first appointment, especially if you had one early on.  With my first DS, I didn't have a single ultrasound until 18 weeks.
  • I didn't have a sonogram until my 20 week anatomy scan. If it weren't for LO urethra measuring too big that would of been my 1 and only throughout the 9 months. I was the one who wanted the urethra looked at again even though they thought it was no big deal really I didn't want 5 more months of worry for no reason. You might be too early to hear a heartbeat. My Dr didn't use the doppler they have in the office til my 2nd appt. I was disappointed at the time but I certainly know now what to expect. Every office is different. We also didn;t opt for any extra testing and I wasn't high risk so I am guessing those are the main reasons we would of had only 1 sonogram.

  • I just had my first appointment at 8 weeks, 3 days yesterday.  They did not do a sono and I was disappointed.  Infact, besides the two rounds of bloodwork, they haven't done anything else to confirm that my little one is still in there... (But I'm sure with my symptoms.)

They just did a ton of questioning, a pap and some other test.  She did say that my uterus felt about 8 or 9 weeks during my pelvic exam.

But they scheduled my sono for two weeks from now at a seperate office.  They called it my "dating sonogram."
