TTC after 35

whats your take?

I have noticed a number of our gals are moving on to the first tri board or P after IF (yeah them! :)) Anyway, I cant help but notice that the ones that are moving forward (getting KU) are all IVF girls.

I guess what I'm really wanting to know is, are our chances that much slimmer with TI and IUI?  Those sucess stories, i have not seen much of...just a thought.

Re: whats your take?

  • I am an old timer on this board and seen a LOT of comings and goings. Unfortunately I think most people on this board either get PG naturally (I count TI as natural) on this board or with IVF.  Of course there are some that an IUI will work for but I think the success for IUI is greater if your sole problem was not ovulating at all and that was fixed with a pill or two.  I do remember a few ladies who had success on IUI's.

  • Your chances with success will depend on your own situation.  For most people there is a 20% chance of getting KU with TI.  For me that chance is 0%.  For my age and with my medical history IUI was only 13% but with IVF it is 53%.  Does that help?

I think that's very true, my RE said IUI over TI gives a slight edge when over 35, but the key factor is having 2 or more follicles, anything less than 2 basically gives you the same odds as ttc naturally. IVF typically gives higher success % but again depends on circumstance. My sister did 3 unsuccessful IVF's in a row and then next month got KU naturally, so you just never know! If I wasn't covered by insurance for the IUI's I'm not sure I'd spend the money and time on them.

  • It does seem like there are alot of ivf pregnancies on here.  I think part of it is that people who do have IF are here longer, therefore posting more often and those are the ones we see alot.  There are plenty of women getting pg naturally with ama but I wonder what the numbers actually are.  I think your chances with iui depends on your individual fertilty issues though.  For some here iui would never work.  I don't plan on doing ivf so I hope I am one of the lucky ones.

  • I also want to add I think it's important to not just rely on the IUI itself but BD as well. I know some RE's don't give instructions on this, but we were told to BD the night of and the next morning, Dr.s orders. It makes sense, it's not an exact science and you need to cover your bases...

  • Thanks a bunch!  We don't only rely upon IUI, we BD night of and following days as well. We will not be persuing IVF so hopefully IUI will get the trick done.

  • ? It's completely the opposite of what you're saying. Most people conceive through sex. If you go to the Pregnant after 35 board - only a couple of the women on the check in (dozens) had any intervention at all.

On ALL the TTC boards, not just here, you get an accumulation of the less fertile couples because the most fertile ones move on to the pregnancy boards.

  • My RE told me IUI after 35 only slightly increases your chances of pregnancy over natural conception.  IVF after 35 gives you the best odds.  That's not to say you can't get pg with an IUI, it's just doesn't have as high of a rate of success.

  • Well, since high fsh, low antral follicle count, low AMA situations have trouble responding to stimming meds, many times IVF is not successful either, if they can't get more than 1-2 mature eggs, and many REs will not recommend IVF for those cases (waste of money and/or hurts their numbers!). From what I've read and been told by my RE and a second opinion, they certainly give it a much lower success rate than ladies without DOR or POF. I hope IUI is not a waste of time. That would be a pretty big slap in the face.

  • I got PG with my daughter with IUI, after one month of lupron and 2-3  months of follistim.  I was 35 at the time.

  • I think there is a huge difference between mid thirties and 40 and over. I am 42 and am pretty sure IUIs are a waste of time for me.  My RE wants to do them, mostly I think to see how I respond to the meds in eventual preparation for IVF.  I think after 41, especially with lower AMH levels, things start getting really tough with OE.  Even with IVF, I think the potential for success is dicey and I'm not sure how much of a better chance I realistically have over TI.  Someone over on IF posted yesterday a study of over 150 women over 40 undergoing IVF- there were no live pregnancies from anyone with an AMH under something like 0.4.  I've decided after these IUI's I'll do one round of IVF with OE to see what my egg quality is like (I am thinking it is not good).  Then, it will need to be DE.  Just my feelings and I probably would feel different if I wasn't 100% OOP for IVF.

  • I was on this board a lot TTC #1 (I'm now TTC #2) and conceived naturally at 39 (resulted in a m/c) and at 40 after 3 failed IUIs.   I think it really does depend on an individual's situation.  I was in a race against the clock, so after TTC for a few months after my m/c, we decided to be aggressive and go with IUI even though my numbers were all good and I had no known issues.  After a recent m/c, we are still trying again naturally.
