What are you doing with LO??

Leave it to the teacher to overthink things. What do you DO with LO throughout the day? I know she's only 11 days old, but I feel like we should be active and exploring all the time....but of course, I'm trying to rest some too. We try and do some tummy time, but she HATES it, so I just try and get some time with her laying on my chest. When she's awake, I try and talk to her a lot. I tell her what we're doing as we walk around and stuff like that. And, we try and read a few books. Then, she eats, poops, and sleeps a bunch. I don't THINK she sleeps too much during the day, but sometimes I wonder when she has nights that are rough.

Help this FTM out. What do YOU do with your LO during the day?

We spend our days eating, sleeping, pooping and trying to get back to sleep.

  • Asher is really only awake 2x a day, usually when his big sibs are around.  The rest of the time he's eating, sleeping or pooping.  I try to take a walk with him everyday and we usually get out to run an errand 1x a day.  When he's awake, I will put him on the play mat for some tummy time and we just talk to him.  He likes to walk around and look at things too.

  • My favorite thing to do beside cuddling on the couch is swaying and lightly dancing to my I home (iPod dock mounted in my kitchen). DS loves dancing with me and I am also burning calories :) It often rocks him to sleep and it feels good for me to move a little.

Eta: I also place him on his activity mat, he loves it already. He also enjoys siting in the boppy looking into his toy mirror.

  • That makes me feel better. For some reason, my brain says we should be doing long division and stuff at 2 weeks instead of just lounging around. I needed a little reassurance that I'm not forever stunting the intellectual growth of my child by allowing her 11 day old body to sleep Confused

  • The first few weeks Micah was home, I sang and read to him almost all day long. Once we were both ready for some space, I stopped doing it constantly and only tried to take advantage when he's really alert. We put him on his activity mat at around 3 weeks old, only because we didn't think about it until then. He didn't care much for it then, but now, he's used to it and (I think) loves it. He's there right now, trying really hard to hit the mobile while watching Dr Oz. It's scary how much he tries to focus on the TV already. Between that and ceiling fans, I think our entertainment is covered.

  • I feel the same way- especially since my major was early childhood education. But when she is awake I try to hold her and talk to her as much as I can, we 'read' some books and I put her on her activity mat sometimes. There's not much else to do though

  • It is important to let her sleep. The most important thing you can do for her right now is to make her feel safe and secure in her new world. Sleep is very important though and actually, if you are keeping her up and engaging her too much and she is becoming overtired it can cause her to not sleep as well at night. I am a kindergarten teacher, I understand wanting your child to have all the learning experiences and enrichment that they can, but at this stage just cuddle her, talk to her, love her, and make sure her needs are met (which includes sleep) and you are doing what she needs you to do.
  • Oh my, I think you're doing a WONDERFUL job!  I'd say you're probably doing more than a lot of mommies do.  Keep up the good work!
  • I feel the same way- like she should be doing some activity. So once a day when she's awake i try to put her in something- like one day the swing for 5-10 minutes, the next day her little lamb bouncy thing that vibrates, the next day a walk in the stroller.....

but besides that she sleeps, poops and eats most of the day.....

  • I think it is a little too early to really be engaging much. She eat, sleeps, and gets held a lot and talked to. Like PP said, right now is the time for them to know that they are loved and supported.
