Breastfeeding

FTM Question

Ok ladies, anxious to meet baby and planning on breastfeeding- or at least giving it my best shot.

What are my must have items? I don't want to invest more than I have to in case it doesn't work for us. I'm clueless as to what I'll really need- and what I can get later if it goes well for us.

Thanks for the advice! :)

Blessings! :)

Re: FTM Question

  • Must have: boobs.

Nice accessories: lanolin cream, boppy pillow, 2 or 3 nursing tanks, a good water bottle, a Costco-sized bag of trail mix to keep where you nurse.

I would also encourage you to read up on kellymom.com or a book ("The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" is great). A lot of women have a few challenges, but with the proper information and support you can get through it. Without the proper information and support, women quit and say it "didn't work out", which is a shame.

    You crack me up, tokenhoser!

OP, yes you need to have boobs and a baby to get started. Find out if your hospital and pedi will have lactation consultants on staff to help you and LO through the first few days. Everything that PP listed is perfect to get started. If you are offered the chance to get Apno cream, GET IT! It is by prescription only (usually prescribed by your OB). Definetly get the above mentioned book. I would also recommend getting "The Breastfeeding Mother's Guide to Making More Milk" by: Daina West and Lisa Marasco. Read these books BEFORE baby comes to better prepare yourself. GL, and you're welcome back here to get more support/answers when your LO arrives. H&H9!

  • Breast pads! The good thick ones, some of them can be pretty thin. Also I loved my boppy. And, get the lactation consultant in there as soon as possible. When my son was born I immediately put him on and he seemed to latch on really well, the nurses were even commenting on how well he was latching...Well he was NOT on there right..both of my nipples were completely bruised from him, which made it even more painful to breastfeed. The consultant was extremely helpful to me. But, no matter what, tough through the pain(if you even have any) because after you get used to it, there is nothing more awesome than bonding with you baby that way! Good Luck!
