2 yr old with a stammer

DD is 2 and has a stammer-- it started around a month or 2 ago and has gotten much worse lately.  I have read online that this is not uncommon for the age most of what I have read basically says to be sure that we are speaking slowly and with pronunciation with her and that it will resolve itself.  I have contacted a speech therapist to do an evaluation, but wondered if anyone else had a similar situation and what you are doing or have done to resolve it?  TIA!

  • You're doing the right thing, and at the right age.  Early intervention is key when little ones develop speech impediments of any kind.  Let the therapist do the eval and he/she will recommend next steps.

We never took DD to a therapist because I think for now it's super normal.  But we just made sure we didn't interrupt her and let her finish what she had to say instead of finishing her sentences for her.  Also, make sure you don't rush her and act as if it doesn't bother you (be patient if it takes a long time to finish a sentence).  I've heard it will make them self conscious otherwise, and get discouraged talking.  We had stammering on and off for a year but now she's fine.  Sometimes it'll come back when gets really excited about something she's saying and her little brain is working faster than her mouth.  I think what you're doing is great.

THis! We have been going through this for about a month now. It gets a little worse and then better. Hopefully just another one of those stages!
