DD will be turning 2 a month from today. She has been showing signs of potty training for a while now. She tells me when she pees and when she is about to or goes poo poo. We have a potty chair that is next to a toilet and she will sit on it. She will even grab so toilet paper...even though she is fully clothed. I thought it was better to wait until 2.5 yrs but I'm wondering if it's okay to start once she hits two. The thing is, we close her door during her nap and at night, and there's also a baby gate at her door. The gate is set up more to keep our long haired dog and cat out of her room. I don't want her having the pet hair all over her room. And, DD is still very much in her crib and is perfectly happy in it. So that made me wonder, do you just start potty training for day? Do books suggest how to handle this? Our bedroom is no where close to her room so I do keep the camera on me at all times when she sleeps. Will she wake up and let me know when she's in her crib and needs to go?
TIA!
Re: If you potty trained, what did you do for naps and night?
DS1 (almost 4) is potty trained for day and basically nap. I put a pull up on him for nap (just to be safe) and for night. He does not wake up on his own if he is sleeping and he has to pee...hence why we still use a pull up during sleep times. I could probably just keep him in underwear for naps at this point though.
DS2 (2.5yr) we have not started potty training yet.
If your DD is showing signs of readiness there is no need to wait. I'd go ahead and start potty training now. :-)
DS only wears a pull up at night. He hardly ever naps but when he does, we're about 50/50. As soon as he wakes up, he takes his diaper off himself and uses the toilet on his own.
I'm a slacker with PTing so I'll start there.... but DD has been semi- potty trained for about 2 months now and I have her in pull ups for nap & sleep mostly b/c she always poops at nap & sleep and is still not very good at letting me know if she has to poop & she has poop accidents sometimes. I don't think she could stay dry all night at this point regardless.
I also put her in a pull up when we go places which I'm sure I shouldn't do but DS is nowhere near potty training, and I frankly don't want to deal w/ dragging them both into the bathroom w/ me or carseat accidents or whatever. She actually rarely wets her pullup though except nap & nighttime. One day I'll suck it up & do it but just not there yet... I know she can do it b/c she goes to daycare 3 days a week and only wears pullups during nap there and never has accidents.
So I guess I"m saying just do what works for you & follow her cues. there is no 'right' and 'wrong' and it just depends on your own approach, in my opinion.
And as for an age I think it is all about when they seem ready- DD came home talking about big girl underwear and expressing an interest in using the potty so we went for it...her brother has underwear but never is interested in wearing it or sitting on the potty (except occasionally if he sees his sister get an M&M for pooping on it but even then he will sit for like 30 seconds & then move on. ). So I am not pushing it with him yet, I'm thinking this summer I will probably want to try to bring it up & try some things out (they turn 3 in august).
GL!
DS has been day trained since he was 18 months. We keep him in a diaper at naptime and night. He never wakes up dry in the morning, but sometimes he does after his naps. It is a developmental thing that he has just not gotten yet. He never got mixed up with the diaper underware thing. We make sure he goes before he goes to sleep. He just doesn't wake up to go. Also, he is still in his crib, so he can't just get up and go.
This is just us though. G/L to you!
We are not really PTing now, but DS has a potty seat that goes on the toilet. Anytime he asks, we put him on it and he will pee. This happens anywhere from 4x/day to once every few days. He just does it for fun (and for a couple of fruit snacks), but I don't think he's ready for full-on training yet. He actually pooped for the first time on the potty today. He always tells me when he has to poop, but has never wanted to go on the potty until today (just wants privacy to fill his diaper!), so we'll see if he keeps that up.
I am planning to just keep doing this until he shows more interest and starts wanting to use the potty more regularly. I will probably wait until then to start really trying to PT him (as long as it happens in the next 6 months - if not, I might have to start forcing it more).
