This was my first thought too but, he is a lovable character. I guess I think male when I see/hear this name and I've seen on this board suggestions of Remi as a nn for Remington. I think I like it better as a stand-alone name.
Remy has always been a male name to me. Remy McSwain from The Big Easy ("like the cognac, smooth yet strong"), Remy from Ratatouille (but he's a cute rat btw), and Remy LeBeau from the X-men kind of make sure I think of it as a male name. And it looks like I don't know any in real life heh.
Remi is a French boy's name. REMI (R?my): French form of Roman Remigius, meaning "oarsman." I've never heard of anyone naming a little girl that - I guess due to the higher number of francaphones up here its not a problem of not knowing which gender it is attribuited to. And my first thing I think of when I hear the name Remi is the character Remi LeBeau from X-men, lol.
I love some of the older French male names [Corin, Mattieu, Barnabe, Serge, and Alaire] unfortunately there isn't a drop of French blood in either side of the family, so kiddo gets a thuroughly anglophone name. lol
I know a guy Remi...I forgot what it is short for....something hispanic, I think...but I have also heard of people NNing their daughters this. So either I suppose. I would lean more toward boy because of my personal association.
French boy's name if it has an accent on the 'e', or a nn for Remington (which is also a boy's name) if it doesn't. I just don't get how someone could think this is appropriate on a girl.
One of my best friend's daughter's name is Remington, but they have always referred to her as 'Remi'. My sister is also using it as her 'girl name' when/if they have kids.
Because of these two, I think of it as a girl's name. Not to say it couldn't be just precious on a little boy.

This is my thought process:
Remi --> Remy --> male --> Remy Savoy a la Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse series.
lmao. It is. I think boy, aside from rat.

This.
Like this. It brings up the same feelings as when someone names their kid Jamison.
wow... they named their daughter Remington?
I'm gonna bet she'll have a hard time convincing a bf to come home to meet her dad with that name. lol
teenaged boy's mental process: "she's named after a gun... I'm about to meet her daddy... quick! Pretend to be gay!!!"
Ahhh, sorry, I'm a ***.
But I can't stop laughing at the mental image.
If I had to pick boy or girl I would say boy
BUT....
Our dog is named Remington and we call him Remmy so I think I would giggle if I saw a child named that
