What are you taking for heartburn?

I'm semi-managing it with a Pepcid AC tablet a day and the occasional Tums, but I am wondering if there is something a bit more effective that's also safe?  I prefer a pill to a chewable because the chewables make me nauseous.  Anything else I might try?

Re: What are you taking for heartburn?

  • My Dr. told me prevacid was okay to take.  I started taking it a few days ago, and haven't had heartburn since. :)

  • Also, a holistic suggestion from my Dr. was apple cider vinegar.  Put it in some water and drink, and voila.

I have not tried this, so I don't know if it works or not, but a lot of my friends say it does.

  • I am taking Zantac 75, but as I have gotten bigger it hasn't worked at well so I talked to  my doctor again and she said I could take up to 300 mg (I'm pretty sure it's mg) a day.  I have only had to take 150mg twice so far but it's good to know that I can take more if I need it.  I was also told it's only going to get worse as the babies get bigger so I'm glad I have a new plan!

  • the generic version of zantac 150. but it only works if i take it as soon as i start to feel heartburn. If i wait and try to get through it, then when i cave it does nothing.

  • I take the Target brand knockoff of Prilosec. Less than half the cost and super effective. 150 MG size.

I used to do Tums but the chalky-ness made me feel really sick and it only got rid of heartburn for 5 minutes. I had heartburn so bad at night I would wake up every 10 minutes practically crying from the pain. Once I started taking these the pain has been gone ever since. I did get my doctor's okay first though.

  • My doc recommended Zantac 75 2x a day. So far, it's working pretty good.
  • I have used both zantac and pepcid plus lots of tums. I have also used prilosec which my doc ok'd when it has been really severe.

  • I'm one of those crazy, non-med people, so take from this what you will...

My heartburn was getting so bad that I increased the amt of Tums I was taking and it still had no effect.  I slept sitting upright for a couple nights and it still wouldn't quit.  I was getting desperate enough to cave and take some sort of meds, but had to try one last thing first.  I sent DH to the store for papaya enzyme pills.

They have worked miracles.  Using the papaya enzyme and making sure I don't drink liquids with my meals, has completely made my heartburn go away.  Also, as another PP mentioned earlier, apples help too.

Take it or leave it, but it works great for me, and I wish I had known about it with my first.

  • My dr told me not to even bother with Tums or Rolaids, that they don't work for pregnancy heartburn. He said liquid plain Mylanta, and Zantac75 up to 4xday. The Mylanta didn't do much for me but the Zantac has been awesome. I can finally sleep!

  • A Prilosec 150 mg tablet twice a day, and tums. Also, be careful what you eat, stay away from carbonation and caffiene, spicy, greasy, and acidic foods. If it's worse at night, keep yourself propped up while you sleep.

  • i was taking 2 tums pretty much every night because i was getting heartburn as soon as I laid down constantly.  I just assumed it was something i had to deal with.  the tums didn't always help though.  I had a Dr. appt on Monday and mentioned that I had been taking 2 Tums a day, my midwife said she would give me a perscription if I was getting hearburn that much.  I think the perscription is some type of zantac... anyways- it's been awesome since Monday- no heartburn.  :)

And I had been having constipation, which my midwife said may have been fromt he extra calcium in Tums- so watch out for that too

  • OTC Prilosec.  Works great.  One pill every morning.
  • I have had issues with GERD and recurring ulcers for over a decade, and when I'm experiencing a flareup OTC meds don't even begin to help me with it. My entire pregnancy has been one giant flareup ever since I was just a few weeks along, so after trying Prilosec for a few weeks (because it's cheaper) and failing to improve on it, my doc decided it was time for the big guns - 40mg of Nexium. It's expensive as all hell and very difficult to get insurances to cover, but it's the only thing that gives me ANY relief. :-/ I still have to take Tums periodically, but Nexium takes care of most of the problem and allows me to function.

  • I've been taking Tums but only if I'm desperate. Chewing mint gum works too because you're producing more saliva to help ease the heartburn.
