Toddlers: 24 Months+

2 1/2 year old talking about poop non-stop

I feel so silly asking about this! My son is completely pee trained, but will not poop in the potty. For the past week he has been obsessed with talking about poop and then laughing. We've tried ignoring it, we've explained that it's not something we talk about and nothing is helping. Is this in any way normal?  What do I do about it? It's getting old really fast! Help!!

  • Ha!  I think it's a boy thing.  DS is not even PTing yet (except he occasionally pees on the potty at school).  He was obsessed with talking about poop last month.  I either ignored it or started riffing on other words that rhyme with poop.  He got over it within a few weeks.  The more attention you give it, the longer it will last!
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.

  • I could talk poo w/ your little man all day Wink I guess it's part of being a mommy. But on a serious note, I would explain it's not appropriate in public. I think once he becomes fully #2 trained, he will no longer have interest in the topic.

  • #1- I think this is totally normal, and something silly you'll look back on. Maybe it's embarrassing now, but c'mon that stuff makes great stories when he's older! I used to nanny these two boys who went through a phase where they were OBSESSED with bodily functions and body parts.  They went marching around the house all day chanting, "Poop in your pooy butt penis head!" etc, etc.  And I totally laughed when they weren't looking.  Some days it got old, but just let yourself laugh at it (when DS can't see you that is).  It's just silliness.  Write it down in a memory book for a chuckle later!

#2- I agree with PP, just encourage your DS that talking about that in public is just not polite.

#3- He may not grow out of it as soon as he's fully potty-trained.  The little boys I watched did this until they were at least 6 and 4.  The 6 year old definitely should have grown out of it by then, but it was just still so funny to them.  As long as they didn't say it in public, we just let them be silly at home.

  • I can't tell you how many conversations I've had about poop or how many times I've read "Everyone Poops". DS used to be PTing but then regressed so we stopped completely. He still talks about poop all the time. I just tell him it's something we don't talk about in public.
  • Thanks everyone! I'm glad my son isn't a weirdo! None of my friends kids are going through this and I wasn't sure what to think!
