I'm a squirter...

Well ive been doing some reasearch because LO has been really gassy and having green poops. The LC I talked to said I may have an overactive letdown and oversupply... Well I think she was right. Im nursing LO as we speak and he started pulling off and coughing and arched his head back. As soon as he pulled off my nipple started spraying! It was crazy got him right in the eye. To think I was so worried at first because it took almost 6 days for my milk to come in and niw im squirting all over! I yelled for DH to come up and see it lol Oh boy...Im trying block feeding right now to see if it helps. Im hoping this is the cause of his symptoms and its not a food allergy... Any other suggestions/advice on how to deal with a forceful letdown and over supply?

  • I don't have any advice, but I have the same letdown problem. I wasn't really worried about it though Embarrassed. Sometimes, if LO pulls away in the middle of the letdown or right as he engages it, he'll get sprayed in the face. I feel like my letdown can overwhelm him, and if I see that he's gulping a lot, I'll pull him off, and put the receiving blanket over my boob to give LO a break and prevent him from choking. I also get an occasional spray in the shower if it's warm enough and I haven't nursed within the last 30 minutes or so.

My LO isn't consistently gassy - just off and on - but he's definitely not having green poops. I hope you're able to figure out a solution!

  • I had that problem with DD, block feeding and time is all that made a difference. I used to unlatch her right after letdown and spray into a burp cloth. Once it stopped spraying I'd let her back on and it was much better in terms of her chugging and choking. I definitely have overactive letdown again, but so far DS's poops are normal and while he is spitting up some, it's not near as bad as she did. He refuses to be unlatched so I just let him chug and sputter and am sure to burp him when he does finally let go to get some air (2-3 times a feeding). I have no doubt his gas issues are related to the chugging. I'm hoping not pumping early this time around and doing one sided feedings right from the start will keep it from getting as bad as it was last time.

  • Me too... I agree with everyone else.  Block feeding is the way to go, and leaning back for gravity to help.  DS#2 gets sprayed in the face all the time, in fact we bath him every night because his hair is always matted and sticky!!

He also gets terrible gas from all the gulping and chugging of milk.  I can hear him choking it back and gasping.  It will get better though, with my DS#1 the oversupply and forceful letdown was much better by about 6 weeks.  Hang in there!!:)

  • I sprayed DD in the face yesterday! U can go to kellymom.com and look up oversupply. I started doing revers pressure to help with my letdown and it helped some

  • I had to start feeding from one breast only per feeding due to minor oversupply/letdown/engorgement issues. Helped tremendously, and no more green poo!
