Mirena Question

I stopped nursing ds in January and got Mirena in February. I didn't have my period at the time, so it was VERY painful when it was inserted. My period came back in March for the first time since right before I was pregnant. It was 5 days, and I was thrilled that everything seemed "normal". However, this is my second period and it is now going on 2 weeks long... and at full strength! Yikes! Has anyone else experienced an unusually long period like this due to Mirena? Is this my body just trying to figure things out? I'm going to call the dr. tomorrow and see if I should be worried.

Sorry if this question has been asked before; I've been out of the loop for quite awhile.

Thanks ladies, and happy almost 1st birthday to your little ones. :)

Re: Mirena Question

  • It is normal for your body to be acting crazy, it can take up to 6 months. I don't think the fact that it was painful at insertion has anything to do with any current bleeding. Check the strings, if they are still there it can normal. You do have Mirena and not the copper T, right? Because with copper T heavier periods are common. I would check with your OB just to be sure but it all sounds normal to me.

ETA: If you can't feel the strings is not a reason to think the IUD fell out, the string usually soften up and curl up around the cervix.
