Really struggling-bfing and weight related

Hey everyone!  I've got a 4.5 month old, and I'm very blessed to have a rockin' milk supply this time around.  Unfortunately, I'm unable to lose any weight while breastfeeding/pumping.  The minute I cut calories, start counting carbs etc., my supply tanks.  I set a 1 year goal for myself with breastfeeding, and made it to 1 full year with DD1, so I feel I should stick with it as long as I can.

My trouble is that I'm overweight (about 40 lbs), and having a very hard time with body image issues.  I hate shopping for clothes, but what I have doesn't exactly fit or flatter me.  I try very hard to eat mostly whole grain breads and pasta and cereals, and get in fruit and vegetables.  We also have alot of protein, like chicken, during the week.  The scale doesn't budge unless I drastically cut my calories and work my tail off at the gym.

I just need some advice.  I'm not a formula hater, but I would really like to meet this goal I've set for myself again.

  • No advice here.  I am struggling with the same issue.  Somedays I want to quit breastfeeding so that I can feel like myself again.  Then I feel guilty for being selfish.  The first year of your baby's life goes by so quickly and then you have the rest of your life to lose weight and work on your body right?

  • I wouldn't focus so much on quantity as quality. Limit sugars & processed food replacing it with more protein, veggies, lean meats & whole wheat.

  • totally understand.  I am a personal trainer and teach aerobics and still can't drop the last 15.  I gained 55 and my babe is 9 months.  I can't not eat!  I get really bad blood sugar issues when I teach if i try to cut calories.  My best advice is to get out and walk.  Lift weights!  Build muscle now so that when you do stop bfing your body will be super primed to lose the 'just in case the grocery store closes" weight :)
  • Do what you need to do to be happy. That is great that you have a 1 year goal for breastfeeding! But remember - happy Mommy equals happy baby!

  • I'm having success with WW. I make sure to eat all my daily points, activity points, and don't stop myself from dipping into my weekly pts. I am down 8.5 lbs in 4 weeks with 38 to go.

I am doing WW as well and I get extra points for BF, working out, and an extra weekly allotment for daily treats or a "cheat day".  I am only down 8lbs 8 weeks in but I also tend to cheat more than just 1 day :)  GL

  • Here's another vote for WW.  I just started about 3 weeks ago and I've lost about 4 pounds.  It's not much, but this is the first time my weight has budged since I was a few weeks postpartum.  I have not noticed a difference in my milk supply.

  • I did not loose much baby weight until 8-9 months pp, and then it just kind of started disappearing, even though I didn't change my diet much. I didn't cut calories for fear of loosing my supply. Hang in there - and I say go with the 9 months on - 9 months off approach. (it took 9 months to put the weight on, give yourself 9 to take it off)
