Pregnant after a Loss

Steroid Cream?

OK ladies... I have a fungal rash under both of my breasts. I'm not sure how the crap I got it, but my OB prescribed me a steroid cream. I have assumed it was OK to use, because she knows I am pregnant (obviously).

However, today when I went to fill the prescription, I mentioned to the pharmasist that I was pregnant and wanted to double check that this was ok... she hesitated a little and gave me a look like "well... I guess since your Dr. prescribed it". She said that it is a steroid cream and that it is absorbed in the skin, but *shouldn't* cause any harm to baby.

The name of the cream is Nustatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide. One thing that really makes me nervous about using it is something in the package inserts that reads: " Therefore, any topical corticosteroid preparation should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus".

I am just too nervous to use it, but how am I supposed to kill the "fungus"? Any natural remedies anyone knows of? It really burns and itches, and I'm dying for some relief. Baby powder alone is not working... help! WWYD?

Re: Steroid Cream?

  • If I were you,  I would call your OB back and tell her your concerns and the warnings on the label and the hesitation of the pharmacists.. etc.   At minimum, the OB could at least give you some peace of mind. Obviously, you want to get rid of it but I totally get your concern.

  • That's tough. It is pregnancy class C, so it hasn't really been studied. But you can look at it this way, heparin is also class C and aspirin is even class D (it has shown negative effects on fetus), but pregnant women continue to use them. The good thing is that topicals have very low systemic absorption. I don't know any other remedies for fungal infections. Sorry, I guess I was really of no help.

  • When I was pregnant with my DD they prescribed me some ointments- steroids and numbing cream, that really concerned me.  The pharmacist called for me and verified what they prescribed me knowing I was pregnant to clear it up.  The only thing they told me was that since I was pregnant to use it only if necessary and once everything cleared up to stop using it and use it sparingly.  I don't know the name of it, so I can't help you there.
