10 Month Sleep Regression?

Good Morning All!

I'm not sure what's going on with DD - and I feel like I could fall asleep at work I'm so tired... I know that no one can tell me for sure what the problem is, but all of a sudden the past 3 nights I feel like we're on Day 1 of sleep training (Ferber) all over again!  Only worse because now she's even waking up during the nights too. :(

DD had been doing great with the Ferber method for the past month and a half - until this past weekend, we spent the weekend at my parent's lake house (2 nights away) and she slept in a pack n play in our bedroom with us.  Being that it was a new place and a new bed, I figured it wouldn't cause much harm if I went back to rocking her to sleep just for the nights we were there - plus that way her crying to fall asleep wouldn't keep the whole house up.  It worked great, she was asleep in minutes and slept all the way until her usual wake up time.

Well then Sunday night it all fell apart when we got home and tried to go back to her normal routine (her putting herself to sleep).  I figured it might be a little rough - but OMG!  25 minutes of screaming, hard.  And then she woke once in the middle of the night, and luckily put herself back to sleep in a minute or two.  Then Monday night she screamed again at bedtime for 8 minutes and woke again in the middle of the night.  Finally last night she screamed again for 8 minutes at bedtime and I almost caved, but didn't.  She put herself to sleep, but then at 2AM she woke up and couldn't put herself back to sleep.  I went in to check on her and I could tell she had pooped, so I'm sure that was preventing her from putting herself back to sleep, but then it was over for the rest of the night until we finally brought her into our bed.

I feel like we are goign backwards now.  She had picked up the Ferber method so easily before but now I feel like we're stuggling more than in the beginning of sleep training!  Her 2 top teeth are coming in and she just started walking this weekend so I know both of those things can cause sleep disruptions but I just am dreading tonight now.

Plus add on to it she's suddenly not eating fruits or veggies (finger foods) and it all adds up to a cranky, tired mommy :(

Thanks for listening!

Re: 10 Month Sleep Regression?

  • My son is all of a sudden waking up and not getting back to sleep either. His second tooth is cutting, so I think that might be what's causing him to wake up. Also, he just started sitting up on his own, so when he does wake up, he immediately sits up and then starts getting fussy.

We've been taking him to bed to get him to sleep which is not easy on me, especially since I'm 5 months pregnant. But for the past few nights, he's been waking at 3am and I've had to feed him to get him back to sleep. I don't know what to do! I know it will pass, but that's not making it ANY easier to get through the days at work. Once I get home I'm pooped and I still need to go through the night routine for the household.

We were never good at trying to let him CIO...I just don't have the heart to do it. I'm hoping he'll get back to himself soon so I can get a full night's rest again without a baby in the bed! HAHA :)

  • I will try and be brief and I know this is anecdotal, but M is a creature of habit. We went out of town and spent the night at a hotel for my first 1/2 marathon. In order to prepare her for the p&p we let her sleep in our room in a p&p for a few days to get her used to it. Then we went back to the crib the night before we left. That entire week was a sleep fail. The night before the race was a sleep fail. When we got back it was WORSE. She was screaming like she was petrified. I haven't done ferber yet, and she normally nurses around 10:30ish and then again at 2 or so (sleeps from 6:30pm to 6:30am). I went to her every time she cried and nursed her (that's how we roll) and it took her two weeks to get back to normal sleep.. She cut a tooth during that as well and is cutting another one (this has been over the past 3 weeks) and I just can't stand to try and Ferberize her until that 4th tooth is cut.

So, in summary: Your baby might really be messed up from that night out and you might need to be patient for a few nights before going back to Ferber.. also, during those few nights that you are a bit more easy on her (i'm not saying rocking her to sleep for 25 minutes b/c that won't help in the long run, but tending to her in the middle of the night maybe?) you can see if she is cutting a new tooth? Those top teeth are brutal!

Also, if your baby is a boy and not a girl i'm sorry.. I default to she/her and I can't remember what you said. :(

  • It got so bad for us that I took DD to the pedi to make sure something wasn't wrong with her. All the pedi could offer was that she might be having teething pain but that everything else looked great, including her weight gain (which meant she was getting enough to eat). Long story short, 2 weeks later, I'm walking zombie mom and DH watches her for an afternoon. She missed her nap and that night, slept PERFECTLY. And later than ever before. So, next day, took away a nap again and same thing, slept wonderfully. So maybe it's time to cut some of her day time sleep down? I hope it gets better for you soon though, it really is awful to revisit those sleepless nights!
