8 month old formula intake?

Our LO turned 8 months yesterday and I'm worried he's not getting adequate formula intake. RIght now he eats a jar of fruit and cereal for breakfast, he used to then drink a 7 oz bottle, now he wants nothing to do with the bottle until mid morning. For lunch he has either a yogurt or a vegetable, today 3 cubes of homemade squash, another 8 oz bottle in the afternoon around 4ish. I pick him up from daycare around 5:30 he then eats, one jar of food, sometimes chicken and veggie or maybe just a veggie. And if I'm lucky he'll eat another 7 oz before bed around 8pm. I will add that feeding him that third bottle is a struggle, for example last night he drank about 5 oz and then refused anymore. So on average I would say he is drinking betwen 20-24oz of formula a day. He was a preemie born 35 weeks and weighs 15lbs. I am worried he isn't gaining enough weight because the solids he's eating are really empty calories. What are your 8 month old's eating habits??

Re: 8 month old formula intake?

  • I think he's eating just fine. This is the age when most babies start decreasing their formula intake (even though it is still vitally important at this stage) and start to increase their solid intake.

DD2 drinks anywhere from 20-30 oz a day depending on her mood.

  • My son just turned 8 months and his schedule is usually 6 oz at 7am. Then around 10am cereal, fruit, and 4oz of formula. Another 4-6 oz and a jar of veggies around 1. 6-8 oz at 4. Some dinner item around 5 when we eat either jarred dinner/cereal or finger food depending on how hungry he is. Then about 8-9pm its an 6-8 oz bottle before bed . I had asked an 8 month menu question and other moms replied that about 25-28 oz is normal. Maybe at breakfast just mix in some fruit with his cereal and he wont be so full on a whole jar or cut down on the amount of cereal. Then he may want that bottle to wash it down

  • I was just about to post a question about this as well. MY son is 8 months old and probably only drinks about 20 oz a day. He doesn't want to stay still to drink and is more interested in playing with the bottle. I called the doctor because I'm not feeding him meat. I want to avoid meat until he is older but I also don't want him to be malnourished since he's only really eating fruit veggies and yogurt. I mix cereal with his fruit in the morning. He also only eats about half a jar for breakfast lunch and dinner.
  • I'm a pediatric nurse and your child should be taking between 18-24oz/day of formula/breast milk from birth until 12 months old, in addition to any solid foods.  The range is taking growth spurts and pre-mature infants into consideration, as well. Be sure to go to the regular check ups to ensure your child is gaining weight and growing adequately.
  • I put DD on a feeding schedule that her pedi approved of when she was 6 months old. She just turned 7 months. She's in the 90th percentile in height & weight since birth so she's def getting enough to eat.

8:00am - Cereal and fruit (she eats about half a jar of fruit) and 8oz bottle

12:00pm - 2 cubes of baby food, some cereal puffs, or a couple of teething biscuits and an 8oz bottle

4:00pm - 2 cubes of baby food, some cereal puffs or teething biscuit, 8oz bottle

8:00pm - 2 cubes of baby food (she usually doesn't finish it though) and an 8oz bottle.

She almost always eats ever last bit of her solid food and I give her the puffs or biscuits so she can learn to feed herself a bit because she's going through an independence phase. She sleeps literally after every meal, and she is happy and satisfied enough between meals. She doesn't get fussy for a bottle unless I am running behind to get her food prepared.
