Toddlers: 24 Months+

XP: Switching to a toddler bed?

Hi ladies - I'm still over on 12-24 but you would have more experience with this.

Twice in the last two weeks we've caught DS with one foot on his crib railing.  He's a little guy and I'm not sure he has the height/strength to get over (or the motivation to really try) but I don't want to underestimate him.  When did you know you needed to move on to a toddler bed?

Our crib is "convertible" but it didn't come with a toddler rail so basically it converts to a low day bed and we'd need to get an after market bed rail.  Any recommendations?

Re: XP: Switching to a toddler bed?

  • How low is the mattress in his crib?  We moved the mattress all the way to the floor before switching him to his bed and got an extra couple of months out of it.  When he started climbing out regularly, we moved him.  Once we moved DS to his bed it was all over.  We don't use a rail but we line the floor with pillows, just in case he falls out, which he's never done.  But, he won't stay put!  We end up with a little boy in bed with us every night, like clockwork!

  • Ds's bed is about 18 inches off the ground. He's been in the bad from about 18 months. He is a climber as well. We never used a bed rail. My reason for that is a friend I used to work with had one for her daughter. She checked on her one night to see her hanging with her head caught between the bed and rail, choking. She found her just as she passed out. The model she had was not recalled. I'd rather have my son fall what I feel is a tiny distance than have that happen. He falls off our couch onto the time floor on a regular basis and is fine. I think someone on here's ds bruised his clavicle or something falling out of bed. Painful, sure. But alive and without brain damage. I realize I'm in the minority thinking this way, but you probably would be too if it happened to someone you care about.

  • S is still in her crib too, she's never tried to climb out, although I think she could if she wanted to, as she can get out of her PNP when we travel. We haven't switched her yet because we're doing a big move in July and I figured I'd wait until then to do the whole transition. We were at my parents this past weekend though and she slept in my old bed which is a full/queen and she did great, she didn't fall out and only got out once or twice.
