Cloth Diapering

New to cloth!

We have one boy who is a little over 2 and are expecting another little boy in July! I have recently decided to switch to cloth diapering (allergy issues) and am so happy to see so many people doing it! I just purchased our first 5 diapers and can't wait to try them out! I don't know anyone personally who is doing it and everyone I tell including our family thinks I have lost my mind! My question is I have been reading a lot of posts where their microfiber inserts are stinking...is this a common problem? We have a front loading HE washer and am going to first try Tide (it's what we use already) and if that doesn't work go to hard RnG! What amount of powder Tide do you guys use for a front loading HE? Ok no more rambling! I look forward to using you guys for support in this addiction...I mean journey :)

Re: New to cloth!

  • I have microfiber inserts and I have never had stink issues with them. I use tide ultra. I actually use the regular amount of detergent that I would use for other laundry because it wasn't enough before. I rinse cold, hot wash, cold rinse. We also have a front loader HE.

  • Ok  that's good to hear! Thank you so much!
  • I'm a RnG girl.  I've also had plenty of stink issues.  When they stink, I soak them in Funk Rock, then wash.  Problem solved.

I do prefer natural fibers though.  Bamboo power! ;)

  • Congrats on making the change. You will never want to go back. I have an HE front loader as well and when I want to get stink out of clothing or diapers, I pour 1-2 cups of white distilled vinegar in the bleach section of the washer and run the load like normal. It really works. I do however use soap nuts for all laundry washing. I have found that Tide and other manufactured laundry detergents can create lots of skin irritations, so I decided to go the soap nuts route. I love them (But that is another topic) Hope this helps.
