Toddlers: 24 Months+

Anyone experience a competitive parent?

I have known my friend since childhood.

Since having her son, I've noticed that she refuses to invite anyone else into her discussion about her child, his new sport or what new language he is learning. I have tried to discuss my son, and his accomplishments...and she seems to glaze over them, turn the discussion to discuss their own son.  I understand every parent, parents differently, but this is a whole new type of animal I never experienced before...

She's even post-jacked my Facebook now.

Example of a post on facebook: (this was not the actual conversation)

Me: OMG DS just took his first step!

Her:  My DS took his first step a month ago; good for you. (Her DS is 6mo younger)

Me:  -Silence-

I've realized, now to just smile, nod, give vague answers.  Its annoying, but what are ya gonna do right?  I've watched SNL's Penelope...yep thats her...but as a mommy.

Re: Anyone experience a competitive parent?

  • My SIL.  She runs her kid through all of his advanced tricks in front of us all the time.  It gets me that she feels the need to do this all the time.  It's not a competition if we aren't playing that game.  I just make a point to ask my kid in front of her if he's having fun and to go "play and just have fun".
  • Loading the player...
  • A friend of mine does that.  It's obnoxious, but I figure that she's so insecure that she has to "one-up" to make herself feel better about her own parenting.

  • Yes I have a friend like that.  It can be overwhelming at times and frustrating.  Its hard not to go back and forth but in the end I just breathe and take the high road.  I remember when my oldest PT her 2 kids who were older than mine were not PT- she immeidately started putting them on the potty and making them sit for 30-45 minutes at a time!!  I felt awful for her little ones!  The most ironic thing about it is one of her friends is competitive with her and she just goes on and on about how annoying it is and she's so glad she's not like that!  I always just laugh inside!
  • I don't know anyone personally but can picture it (uhhh mostly based on some ppl on TB...lol). You should go to YouTube and look up mompetition tho for a good laugh about it:)
