Cloth Diapering

Hello and a yeast question

Hello, I'm Aimee and I have a 9 week old son.

I've been lurking here since before he was born and am thankful for all the information I've gotten from you ladies. However now I have a question.

At his 2 month check up today she said the rash that we've been battling is a yeast problem. She prescribed some cream that I know is not cloth diaper safe so I picked up some disposables (easier than finding a store that sells fleece to make liners). The doc said to use the cream just 3 times a day, so can I use the disposables only for those 3 changes or can I use my cloth the rest of the time, and does the yeast stay in the cloth diapers and need to be washed a special way to get it out or something (my question mark key is broken sorry)

Thank you!

Re: Hello and a yeast question

  • Yes, you need to treat your diapers.  And any fabric store and even walmart sells fleece - all you do it cut it, no sewing involved.  You can use your cloth in between, but you need to treat them before and after.

The best is bleach.  Wash HOT first.  You'll want to turn up your water heater, yeast dies above 122.  Then, Use 1/4c chlorine bleach (good ol' clorox) in your bleach dispenser in a cold wash.  If you don't have one, fill the washer first, add the bleach, agitate for a minute, and THEN add your diapers.  Then use grapefruit seed extract in the rinse cycle to kill any yeast spores.

Stupid question but color safe bleach will work right, and where do you get grapefruit seed. And my closest walmart doesn't have a fabric section or I would of headed there.

  • long response -- Color safe bleach will not work.  Clorox to the rescue in this situation.  Tea Tree Oil will also kills the yeast spores in addition to the grapefruit seed oil.  Most grocery stores with a vitamin/supplement section will most likely sell it, - well that is where I bought mine (Kroger/King Soopers)

I just got over my battle with yeast and my daughter about a week or so ago.  It took Two prescriptions then we finally got rid of it.  My routine fell into this:  Normal cold wash, no detergent. Then, Heavy duty wash HOT - (i Turned up my hot water heater to 130 - yeast dies at around 125 I was told - did a prewash with around 30 drops of TTO and 2 tsp of grapefruit extract - no soap, regular detergent in the regular wash portion then extra rinses.

I used cloth diapers through most of it, I just bought some fleece to use as liners, Joanne's and Hancocks sell it.  I only used 13 diapers from my stash however, I limited my use to my Kawaii's and did laundry every night - so I wouldn't "infect" my precious BG and Blueberrys and to make sure the yeast didn't have an extra day to "grow".  I figured if I had to I could throw away the kawaii's without too much heartache.  They came though two weeks of constant use just fine (go kawaii!!!)  They also took the bleaching without any problems and the colors did NOT fade from the bleach.

Good luck to you dealing with the yeast.  I was told it is one of the most painful of diapers rashes - hope your baby is feeling better than mine did.  She screamed bloody murder every diaper change. -wishing you the best.

If the house ain't burned down and the baby's fed it was a successful day. Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Yea between his yeast problem and his shots today he is not a happy camper. I have fuzzibunz and gdiapers, will the bleach ruin the colors. And thank you for all the information!

  • Hi! I've been battling yeast as well.  Here is a really good description on how to disinfect:
