Paging Dr. SAIF - shellfish reaction or virus?

Necessary Disclaimer: Obviously I will talk over with a doctor and/or allergist before giving him shellfish again.

So Jack had some snow crab legs for the first time last night.  He told us "I like lobster!"  So that was great except ... in the middle of the night he threw up (in bed.)  And then later - threw up again.  And then this morning around 10:30 - threw up again.  He's pretty lethargic - just laying and watching TV - and taking in fluids (apple juice/water) but not really eating.  He did ask for cereal when he got up today (close to noon) and I gave him some - he ate a few bites - and drank the milk (thirstily - and I let him - it wasn't a lot of milk.)  He also had 2 spoonfuls of honey this afternoon but then his tummy made a weird gurgle and that was that.

Other currrent issues - chronic constipation - we're working on it with miralax (past 2 days, not today obviously) - but I know that can make you throw up - although he did have a BM yesterday and day before (not his usual "amounts" - but the miralax has stuff starting to move, at least.)

He also appeared to be coming down with a cold yesterday afternoon - lot of sneezing and some thickening mucus.

Finally - we all had the brutal tummy virus back in  December - the one that EVERYBODY was getting.  He actually ended up in hospital dehydrated after too much barfing and diarrhea.  So if this IS a tummy virus - it's not that one (maybe it's a cousin though - ugh.)

Anyway - not sure what to think.  I know one allergic reaction to shellfish can be vomiting .. and I know it can last a day.  So this could be a reaction to the crab legs.  Interestingly - I did ask him, "what do you think made you barf?"  And "he said, something I put in my mouth."  And when I said "what?"  He responded, "the lobster." So maybe he has a "gut" reaction (pun intended) that it was indeed the crab (which he decided to call lobster although we told him it was crab legs..)

What do you think?  Purely posing this question non-scientifically - I will talk over with his pedi and see if they think it merits allergy testing before we offer shellfish again!!

Wheee!

Re: Paging Dr. SAIF - shellfish reaction or virus?

  • Alex's allergic reaction always manifests itself in barfing and/or hives.  So it's definitely possible.

(And thank you God for barfing and hives only, I cannot imagine having to deal with worse).

  • Our allergist claims that reactions that happen more than 2 hours after the food is ingested is not a true allergy. It is possible that it is a sensitivity though (there is no way to test for sensitivities obviously).

The fact that he threw up multiple times over a longer period of time I would think virus. We have has this kind of throwing up 12 hour bug twice now. DS1 couldn't keep water or juice down for hours.
