Toddlers: 24 Months+

What is better to transition to?Toddler bed or Double bed??

We are going to use the crib for DD2 (due in August), so we want to transition DD1 (22 months) to a bed next month so we have a while to get used to it before DD2 arrives. We have a double bed in the spare room that needs to be out of there since we will use the spare room for the new nursery and DH doesn't want to use the double in the spare room downstairs since we have a futon.

We do have a toddler bed (given to us) but since we have to put the double bed somewhere or get rid of it, DH proposed we move DD to a double and not use the toddler bed at all.

My only concern at this point with using a double bed is that I am scared that unless I put the mattress and box spring on the floor, that even with using bedrails, DD will fall and hurt herself. BUT if we put her mattress on the floor, it will be so much easier for her to get out of bed and get into things instead of sleeping which will make the transition a lot harder! lol

Advice needed please! TIA

  • We are moving DS in June to the guest room so that new baby due in August can have his crib.  We're just moving him right into the queen that's all ready there.  It didn't make sense to buy a new bed and my friends who have the toddler beds say they wish they would have gone straight to a twin or full.  This way one of us could sleep with DS if we needed to.  We just plan on getting the rails and hoping for the best!

  • Honestly, I've tried both, and I must say I prefer DD's full sized bed. She enjoys cuddling and reading books before bedtime, and the toddler bed just didn't cut it. We have hers currently with the boxspring and mattress on the floor, but we plan to put it on a frame soon. DD is one of those who sleeps all over the bed on most nights, and there has not been a single night she's fallen out of it. It was a different story with the toddler bed. :)

Definitely start training your kid to understand that once placed in the bed she cannot get back up out of it. My DD knows this (hates it on most nights, but she does still obey the rule) and it's made life so much easier. It just takes a bit of time, and a lot of patience.

  • I asked this a few months ago as we had DD in her toddler bed part of the crib we wanted to use for DD2.

What we did and it has so far worked was just bought a twin size mattress and DIDN'T buy the boxspring. We are using a bedframe and instead of the boxspring we just bought a piece of thin (but sturdy) ply-wood cut to the same width and length as the boxspring would have been and set it in the frame with the mattress on top. It is about the same height as her toddler bed so she can get in and out. We then just got a bed rail so she doesn't fall out.

  • We put the boxspring under out twin frame, then the mattress on the frame, so it was still short enough for DD to climb up.

  • We transitioned DD to a queen bed from a crib.  It was fine.  We put the box springs and mattress on the floor and I used a body pillow so that she won't fall out.  We've never really had a problem with her staying in bed.  we used a queen bed because it is what we already had.
  • Thanks for all the advice/suggestions! It looks like the double bed it is =)

  • We went right to a full and put the box spring on the floor instead of using a frame. We would have to buy one eventually and it has been great! DS loves his big boy bed
