Food Allergy

daily medication

Do you give your LO daily meds?  if so, which one?

My son has been in the ER twice in the past two weeks from unknown reactions.. we think the first one was from someone kissing him and his eye swelled up and yesterday he was playing with his cousins toys and ended up with a super swollen eye so we took him to the ER again b/c he refuses benadryl.

We were told to give him a daily claritin pill but i'm just not a fan doing it daily... just wanted to get your input and what do you give daily?

I'm really so sick of these allergies!  They want to retest him again in couple of months even though he was just tested in January.  i hope no other allergens are creeping up. that would just STINK.

Re: daily medication

  • Hi, magdusia!

After Kate had her second "asthma" attack a couple of weeks ago, we were told to give her Singulair (a prescription) every night.  I am going to do it, and have been for the last week or so.

We were also told to give her Claritin every day, but she seems to do better with Zyrtec.  Since her asthma attacks, we have been giving her Zyrtec about 2-3 times a week.

And having reactions to unknown things is so awful.  I hate not having answers.

  • My son takes daily meds...it makes me feel secure that his allergies won't be set off by pollen, grasses and the laundry list of things that set him off.

  • We were on a daily zyrtec until yesterday.  My daughter's environmental allergies are haywire right now (she was "on fire" according to our allergist haha).  Poor baby was a red itchy miserable mess.  We're on twice daily prednisolone to get it under control for 2 weeks.  It has made a remarkable difference already in one day.  It's so dry with no rain here in MD and the pollen count is through the roof.  She hasn't been this bad ever and it's the start of the season!

  • We give meds daily.  Until recently it was Zyrtec liquid.  I tried to switch to a generic chewable but it tasted TERRIBLE!  So I switched to chewable Claritin and the boys like that better (two with food allergies, all three with seasonal).

I mentioned this to our pedi and she said that Claritin is not as strong as Zyrtec so I should watch them and see how they do.  So far so good but I may have to switch back to Zyrtec at some point.

  • DD was a red, itchy, miserable mess last week for unknown reasons. (we know she's allergic to dairy, egg, peanuts but not sure about the flare up). Doc has her on 1/2 tsp Zyrtec daily, 1 1/4 tsp Benadryl as needed, RX cortisone cream for the red areas and lube her up with vanicream twice daily. The results were almost instant & incredible. Seems like the Zyrtec has been very helpful since that's the only consistent part to all this - I'm doing everything else on an as needed basis now that she's cleared up so much.

  • thank you all for the replies..

we're now curious if all these swelled up eyes and unknown reactions are all do to seasonal and not food since there was no rash (like usual).. but we never had to deal w/ seasonal and he wasn't sneezing..   I hope it's not seasonal! ugh.
