First time swelling

DH and I took a weekend trip to Williamsburg, VA and spent half of Friday and all of Saturday walking around.  By the end of the day Saturday, my rings wouldn't come off.  That doesn't seem like a big deal, but they're at least a half size too big normally.  I'm really worried that it's a symptom of a bigger issue, but it could just be the excessive walking.  What can I do to keep swelling to a minimum from here on out?

Re: First time swelling

  • Mine do this too when I have been up walking. If I sit and drink a lot of water it has been going back down.

  • DH and I went to DC during my last pregnancy around 32 weeks or so and did a ton of walking and then had a long car ride home. The next morning my ankles were really puffy for the first time and then I almost passed out while shopping (had to call the paramedics because everything was going black). Anyway, my nurse said that it was probably from dehydration. So the moral of the story is to drink up! And also if you notice puffiness to sit with feet propped up periodically throughout the day. I think the biggest concern about swelling is when it's in your face, but for sure you should give your doc a quick call in the morning to be safe.

  • Dehydration is certainly a possibility.  I'm not a big fan of water in general.  DH and I decided that we're back to clean eating tomorrow (no more junk) so maybe I'll add a water requirement to that one too.

  • It also helps to reduce your sodium intake (this is something I struggle with, I am a salt addict!). I found that my fingers get more puffy if I've been doing more activity than normal too.

  • I noticed that the only time I have swelling in my hands is after exercise, specifically walking.
  • As others have said, cut your sodium for a couple days and increase your water intake. I also swell if I've been on my feet too long.
  • my ankles and feet and hands swell all the time. when your elevating your legs elevate your arms also. and maybe your husband can gently rub downward from fingers and hands etc.

  • I walked over 3 miles yesterday and it was about 90 here. Needless to say my hands swelled up big time, I couldn't make a fist they were that bad. After walking I got out of the sun and they went back to normal. Funny thing is my feet and ankles didn't swell at all.
