C-sections

Q from Lurker

Hi Ladies:

My homeboard is IFV (now PAIF) - I hope you don't mind me posting a couple of quick questions over here.

I am pregnant with twins from our 3rd IVF ~ 21 weeks along.  Every u/s has shown our little girl (positioned first) as transverse.  I know there is still time to flip, but I am starting to think about C-Section questions in case she doesn't.  So far, there are two that I was hoping you could give me your advice/insight on:

 1. Are you still able to do a delated cord clamp?

 2. Can you do skin-to-skin contact right away?

Thanks ladies!

Re: Q from Lurker

  • Congratulations! I had my twins via c-section at 36 weeks. Twin A was breech pretty much the entire pregnancy while Twin B flipped from transverse to breech since he had more room.

I wasn't interested in delayed cord clamping but I was able to do skin-to-skin fairly soon after their birth. Because they were only 36 weeks we weren't sure if they would need to go to NICU. After they were checked over and it was determined they were healthy, they were wrapped up and my husband brought them over to me. One of my arms was free so I was able to "hold" one of them while they closed me up. They stayed in the OR with me until they were ready to move me back to our room. My husband took the twins back to our room and they wheeled me in a couple minutes later. After we were in our room, we both did skin-to-skin with the babies.

    Good luck!

  • I was able to do skin to skin right away. They took him to be weighed while I was closed up but I actually "carried him" on my chest as they wheeled me back to my room to recover. My hospital actually has a 2 hour skin to skin policy following birth- no guests allowed during that time following any birth.

  • I doubt you would be able to delay cord clamping, because they strip your placenta from the uterine wall right after the baby is born and sew you back up pretty quickly. You should ask your OB and the hospital about skin to skin. My hospital started a policy of skin to skin with every C-section recently, but you may be able to request it. They will probably need to know ahead of time if it's different than their standard policy for staffing reasons.
  • I think most hospitals don't delay cutting the cord I could be wrong though. I had my first c section last may and I was out of it for the most part until I got to recovery. I of course saw my baby after she was born and then she went to the nursery and got her bath and everything. She then came to me in recovery and I nursed her. I'm an rn in the newborn nursery where I had her so I pretty much knew how things went.
  • With our first two - my husband did skin to skin while I recovered.

With my second two - they were both brought to the nicu as soon as they were born.
