What to do with 8 bins of girl stuff?

We were shocked to find out that we are having a boy this time around when we really thought it was a girl. We are happy though because now we will have one of each.

My dilemna now comes in the form of what to do with 3 years worth of girl stuff that we saved. I know we have at least 8 large bins in the garage. I tried to list a few things are craigslist but it seems a little like a lot of effort to take all the pictures and list each item. So I was thinking here are some options, what do you think?

1. Consignment stores - take the bins for spring/summer now and wait until fall for fall/winter items. Store will give me 30-40% cash on sight. My experience has always been on the low side of things for this store but I do get cash right away and it is done with.

2. Consignment sales - Start tagging like crazy for a sale that is in 2 weeks for the spring/summer items and then in August for the fall/winter items. Advantage, I get to set the pricing and get 65% of the profit. I could make a lot more this. Disadvantage, I have to take the bins to the sale and pick up anything afterwards and the time of tagging. But I guess I would see the payback in larger profit.

3. Craigslist or garage sale - I use craigslist but it just seems like a lot of work for the amount of clothes we have. I have never been a garage sale person and I think the pricing would be less than option 1 and 2.

  • Any of those would work... Depends on what you feel like going with. I usually just donate mine to the Salvation Army (depending on how much i donate i may or may not get the receipt for taxes) since there are a lot of "not as fortunate" families in the area... You could do a mix of all the above, even.

  • No, chance of #3, right?   I held onto my girl clothes through 2 boy pregnancies (I was so hopeful for another girl....)

I have never done those JBF sales, they seem so overwhelming for tagging.

I usually the consignment route or give them to friends who need them.  I just gave away all of DS2 (which where DS1's) summer clothes from last year.  I still have some...

  • I usually take the best stuff to consignment shops, just because it eliminates loads of work for me on pricing and selling it.  I donate the stuff that makes good hand-me-downs and toss the stuff that's too stained, ripped, or handed down one too many times.

I think whatever you're up for doing- but I'm definitely do the consignment shop route if I were you just because you have soo much.

  • I did a JBF sale once and it really wasnt worth my time for the extra little bit of income you get over a consignment shop. I'd either sell them in large lots on e-bay by size or donate them. That trading site looks cool that pper mentioned though!
  • With my DS's clothes I've been trading with a friend. She had her DD first and twin boys later. I just did a consignment sale (for my DD's old clothes) and it sort of sucked for the amount you get back and having to buy hangers etc. In the future I'll only sell big items.

  • If I have a girl next time I plan to go the consingment event route. I have been very careful to take care of LO's things and had always planned on doing the event. If I knew I couldn't be ready in two weeks for the spring sale, I would just wait for the fall sale and make sure to get ready earlier next time.

  • I would do the consignment sale.

I just did a Mom2Mom sale and sold clothing for ALL seasons - made just shy of $500!  It was worth the pricing and work ahead of time.

  • I take out items that are stained or ripped and put them in DH's rag bin.  I can't stand to throw ssomething away that could have one more life.  Then, I have an acquaintance whose church helps young immigrant single moms learn English and care for their babies and find work and child care.  She gets first dibs and then I freecycle the rest.  I am very emotional about getting rid of stuff because I want more kids (but I'm too old  DH too obsessed about college) so it helps that when I'm done, someone comes over and takes it away- no fuss.

  • Look around on facebook for Mommy resale groups in your area, I belong to quite a few and it works great- you just take some pictures, upload and set up a meeting for pick up. Super similar to craigslist but much easier!

Plus you may find someone with boys clothes you like too :)
