TTC after 35

Joining the Clomid club next cycle...

So, I'm back from my 6 mo. TTC follow-up appointment.

The doc says she believes I'm ovulating-- so yay for small victories. If I don't get pregnant this cycle (I'm 3 DPO), I start Clomid 100/day for 5 days and then get an HSG. And we get to pay $100 or so for MH to drop his swimmers off for a swim meet (it's like reverse prostitution!).

So it looks like I'll be here for a bit longer... and I'm going to have to have some conversations with my insurance company and look at the finances. I just discovered that Maine does not have anywhere that does IVF-- I'd have to go to Boston! *sigh* Thank goodness that I use to live in Boston and still have friends down there with whom I can stay if I need to go that route... for $10,000 an attempt. I think I'll cry if we get to that stage...

On a positive note, my doctor's office was AWESOME. From the Medical Assistant to the NP student to my OB/GYN-- everyone was really supportive and totally validated the emotional roller-coaster ride that is TTC at this age. My doc was also really supportive of my weight issues and my challenges with having osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia since I can't exercise at all without meds that I can't take because of their incompatibility with pregnancy.

It made a really difficult appointment that much less difficult.

Now, if they could only empty the waiting room of the 5 (yes 5!) pregnant women/moms who were morbidly obese/under 25/meth-addicted (I recognized a former patient)/eating McDonald's so that I didn't have to have that thrown in my face...  Indifferent

Re: Joining the Clomid club next cycle...

  • I'm glad your appt. went well.  I am in the same boat with clomid, I will be taking it next cycle.  I have my hsg this cycle.  Don't get overwhelmed thinking about ivf just yet.  You may not even need it.  And yes I understand how annoying it is to see the waiting room full of pg women, same with my OB office.  One good thing going to my RE, no pregnant women haha.  Good luck to you!
TTC since Dec. 2010. Me: 37, DH: 38...unexplained RPL

  • Living in Maine sucks when it comes to stuff like this! I'm in Presque Isle, so all I can see is an ob. I was told that if I need to see someone else for further treatment I'll be referred to Bangor or Portland. I hate driving, and the thought of spending 8 hours in a car for a 30 min. just irks me to no end!!  Our insurance doesn't any of this stuff either. We didn't even know they didn't cover the SA until my husband took his sample back and they asked for $120 before they would accept it. They won't even bill us, it all has to be upfront payments. However, he has had one done in the past when we did have insurance that showed everything was fine, but my doc just wants a new one. Right now we're trying to save up the $365 to have an hsg done. I've already done 4 cycles of clomid and ovulate without a problem so there's gotta be something else going on.

I've been checking out international IVF options and think that what we'll go with if it gets that far. Once you get out of the US the price drops dramatically!

  • I could be following you soon too.  I am 9 DPO and if my endo bx shows a leuteal phase defect, I will start clomid next cycle.

Good luck!!  Try to take it one step at a time...

  • I'm glad you and your Dr. have a plan. And I'm sorry to hear you have chronic pain. I  deal with peripheral neurolgia and since I'm TTC I'm limited in the meds I can take too. It's tough.

  • Wow that sucks about Maine! Just don't waste too much time on Clomid- my RE said its a waste of time if you are over 30, you want injectibles to see real results at your age. Best of luck!
  • Not only do I trust my doc, but my aunt-- who didn't ovulate like I am doing-- used Clomid to conceive all three of my cousins, so it does work for women over 30... no offense to your RE.  Smile

Not to mention that I don't have tons of money to throw after injections if it's not necessary.  It must be nice to be in New Jersey, where they pay for one round of IVF! My 41 year old friend just gave birth 3 months ago to a beautiful baby boy whom she conceived with donor sperm via IVF, and it was paid for because she lives in NJ.

I wish Maine would follow suit!

  • I think your cousin is blowing smoke at you- NJ doesn't pay for IVFs. If they did wouldn't everyone move here? There is a law that if your employer has over 50 people and they offer insurance they have to allow IUI and 2 IVFs in the benefits. But they are far from free. Good luck on your clomid!

  • My aunt used the clomid. My friend had the IVF. Trust me, she couldn't afford it on her own... but either way, it doesn't really affect me. Maine doesn't have IVF at all, let alone make it mandatory.

So I'm on the Clomid and I hope that works as well as it did for my aunt!
