Baby Names

Thoughts on Waverly?

I did a quick search and it popped up.  I so remember it from Joy Luck Club.  I also see that it's been used for boys too which I find odd.  I've always thought of it as a girls name.

Thoughts?  We like names that aren't super popular (I love Jake but I don't want my kid to be one of four in his class... kind of thing) but they also can't have made up spellings, etc.

Re: Thoughts on Waverly?

  • I'm not a fan of it... just doesn't really sound like a name to me. Sorry.
  • Waverly is a name given to roads. In my immediate area, we have a pretty busy road called Waverly Avenue and a smaller Waverly Street.

  • My first thought is Wizards because I have nieces and nephews who love that show. (Wizards of Waverly Place) Second thought would be it sounds like a road or street.

I don't find it odd as having been used for boys, I find it odd used as a name for people. It's clearly not my style. EDIT Since everyone has heard of a person with that name I guess I'm going to read or watch Joy Luck Club. I really didn't even know it was a real name. I don't mind the sound of it, I just think of places instead.

  • I remember it from the Joy Luck Club, too.  Wasn't Waverly a total biiitch?

And I think of Waverly Place.

It's a pretty sounding word, but it's NMS.  What about Beverly?

I completely forgot Wizards of Waverly Place.  It's offically a goner...   I just remembered it from the movie (JLC) and remember kinda liking it back then.

  • I had never heard that as a name before I started watching Friday Night Lights. It's the name of a girl on that show. I don't think I like it for a boy or a girl, but I guess it sounds more feminine to me than masculine.

I don't watch a lot of movies. Since everyone else thought of Joy Luck Club maybe I should read or watch that. If I had heard of a person with that name it might seem more likely.

  • Wizards of Waverly Place is what I think of... Also that I hate it as a name.

  • Totally a guilty pleasure of mine. Love it, boy or girl!!!
  • It really makes me think of curtains.

  • I love Waverly. I think it's so melodic and lovely. DH said it reminds him too strongly of Wizards of Waverly Place, so it hasn't been on any of our official lists. I think it's a great classic alternative to the trendier Everly. I'd be so psyched to meet a baby Waverly.
  • Makes me think of a brand that Target sells......

  • It does make me think of towels and linens.

I can agree, though, that it has a pretty sound?it's NMS, but I see the attraction.

ETA: I just read your OP more closely. My comment applies to it as a girl name. I dislike it immensely for a boy. It's very feminine-sounding, IMO.

  • It makes be think of Waverly linens- bedding and curtains and such. I really don't like it for a boy either. I do not mind Weaver for a boy and Everly for a girl though.

  • I actually think its pretty and would only use on a girl..  generally I dislike -lee sounding names but I like this
  • Personally, I can appreciate different names but Waverly is nms.  You have to go with your own gut feeling though.

  • I think it is actually a male name. I knew a guy named Waverly in high school. Perhaps it's from associating it with him, but I am not a fan for either gender.
  • I like it for a girl. I think it's pretty.

  • Not a fan.  It sounds pretentious.  Maybe if it was a family name, though?
  • Reminds me of bold patterned fabric and linens.

How about Everly? It is similar, pretty, and uncommon.

  • I LOVE Waverly! My DH and I are huge 'Princess Bride' fans and in the Epilogue of the book that is Buttercup and Wesley's daughters name.

  • I love it for a girl, but I know DH would never go for it. I can see where it is/was a boy name once upon a time, but now it's nothing but a girl name, IMO.

  • I've always loved it. Had the reaction from other people: "That's not a name, that's a cracker!"

Isn't it listed in Freakonomics as one of the projected popular names? I swear I saw it there.

And I really like Waverly. I've never thought about it before as a name but it's pretty and seems feminine and soft.

  • I really like it for a girl. I think it's very pretty and feminine. Can't picture it on a boy though.
  • I think it's awful. It sounds like a street name, or a piece of computer software.
  • We had a bartender named Waverly... it certainly was easy to remember... kind of unusual and also a name of a place around these parts.

  • Zip it! yikes, horrible!
  • I think anyone who even considers naming their child this, boy or girl, must be crazy. I mean, seriously, who want their child's name associated with the Waverly Hills Sanitorium?

I'll post link for anyone who doesn't know about it or is interested in knowing, but it is most famous for it's genuine hauntings and the abuse of it's patients --
