I did a quick search and it popped up. I so remember it from Joy Luck Club. I also see that it's been used for boys too which I find odd. I've always thought of it as a girls name.
Thoughts? We like names that aren't super popular (I love Jake but I don't want my kid to be one of four in his class... kind of thing) but they also can't have made up spellings, etc.
Re: Thoughts on Waverly?
Waverly is a name given to roads. In my immediate area, we have a pretty busy road called Waverly Avenue and a smaller Waverly Street.
My first thought is Wizards because I have nieces and nephews who love that show. (Wizards of Waverly Place) Second thought would be it sounds like a road or street.
I don't find it odd as having been used for boys, I find it odd used as a name for people. It's clearly not my style. EDIT Since everyone has heard of a person with that name I guess I'm going to read or watch Joy Luck Club. I really didn't even know it was a real name. I don't mind the sound of it, I just think of places instead.
I remember it from the Joy Luck Club, too. Wasn't Waverly a total biiitch?
And I think of Waverly Place.
It's a pretty sounding word, but it's NMS. What about Beverly?

I completely forgot Wizards of Waverly Place. It's offically a goner... I just remembered it from the movie (JLC) and remember kinda liking it back then.
I don't watch a lot of movies. Since everyone else thought of Joy Luck Club maybe I should read or watch that. If I had heard of a person with that name it might seem more likely.

It does make me think of towels and linens.
I can agree, though, that it has a pretty sound?it's NMS, but I see the attraction.
ETA: I just read your OP more closely. My comment applies to it as a girl name. I dislike it immensely for a boy. It's very feminine-sounding, IMO.
Yup. NMS at all.
Reminds me of bold patterned fabric and linens.
How about Everly? It is similar, pretty, and uncommon.
I've always loved it. Had the reaction from other people: "That's not a name, that's a cracker!"
Isn't it listed in Freakonomics as one of the projected popular names? I swear I saw it there.

I LOVED the Joy Luck Club.
And I really like Waverly. I've never thought about it before as a name but it's pretty and seems feminine and soft.

I think anyone who even considers naming their child this, boy or girl, must be crazy. I mean, seriously, who want their child's name associated with the Waverly Hills Sanitorium?
I'll post link for anyone who doesn't know about it or is interested in knowing, but it is most famous for it's genuine hauntings and the abuse of it's patients --
