Tough Mudder dilemma

I know there are some active chicks on this board so I figured I'd come here for some opinions on my dilemma.

We are casually TTC#3.  I say casually because we're not using any protection and I'm tracking my temps, but we're not having tons and tons of sex like we did when DS#1 & #2 were conceived.

Anyways, my DH and I and another couple we're friends with are signed up for the Tough Mudder on May 6th.  (For those of you who aren't familiar with Tough Mudder it's basically a 13 mile obstacle course that takes place on a mountain.  That explanation certainly doesn't do it justice - just google it and watch the video.  It's intense.)  I will be expecting AF or getting a BFP approximately the day before or the day of the Tough Mudder so I'm debating TTA this month.  Could I do the Tough Mudder if I was 4 weeks pregnant?  I know the general 'rule' about excercise is that if it's something you've been doing for a while you can continue it while KU, but I'm not sure if this is kind of above and beyond that.  Any thoughts?

Re: Tough Mudder dilemma

  • Personally, I probably wouldn't do it - but I always err on the side of caution when it comes to this particular type of stuff. BUT if you're in good shape and exercise regularly, then I'm sure it's absolutely fine.

  • My husband has done two (tri-state) and to be perfectly honest no I wouldn't chance it.

The Chernobyl ice bath can't be good for a baby. There is also a strong chance you could fall or hurt yourself.

  • I guess I'm in the minority, but I would still do it.  If you were already at that activity level and your previous pregnancies were complication free I don't see why it would be a problem - unless you DO get a BFP and are hit with awful morning sickness or exhaustion or something.

This is true too.  Ahhh, thus my dilemma.  :)

  • If I had been training and felt up to the challenge, I probably would.  I did martial arts throughout my pregnancy, with my last class three days before Chase was born.  I did cut back some, the further I got along.

I checked out the website, and it says that you can skip the water obstacles if you're not a swimmer, so you could probably skip the Chernobyl ice bath if you don't think it's a good idea.  I've never heard of this, but it looks like a blast!  This is something I could totally get behind training for.  What fun!

  • I swam w/ sharks and zip lined while 7 wks pg w/ DD1. My OB told me the only harm I'm doing is to myself. The baby is well padded and has a lot of protection early on.  I would be cautious and consider how well you will feel regarding exhaustion, nausea, implementation cramping,etc...

Thanks ladies!  I mean this is definitely a cart before the horse kind of question because there is certainly no guarantee I get a BFP this month, but I think I've decided to not TTA and decide about the Tough Mudder if I have to.

I'd do it. I went horseback riding and sledding early  on in the pregnancy.  The baby is well padded and it is the exerciser level you are used to, go for it!

  • Good luck on the "Tough Mudder" run! One of my students is training for the Warrior Dash (sort of similar)...

I had no idea I was pregnant, and I was at a beer/music/art festival--Bronze, Blues, and Brews. (There, I admitted it.) I was on the set-up crew and was building stages, putting up gigantic tents, etc. I was oddly dizzy and had to take many more "pee breaks" than usual, but I honestly just thought it was the elevation -- 9,000 feet up in the mountains. I had no idea until weeks later that I was pregnant.

  • I singed up for my second tough mudder a few months back. I will be 4 months pregnant (Oct 6 is the event) for my second tough mudder. I still intend on participating in the event, but will skip the obsticals that could prove to be harmful to the baby, such as the 15ft leap into the water, the electro shock therapy, and the ice pits.

Although I don't feel like I technically 'complete' the course by skipping obsticals, I am still a tough mudder and can't wait to run it again when I am not pregnant.

I will be making a shirt that says 'touffin for 2'  :)

  • I was wondering how the Tough Mudder went for you at 4 months pregnant?  I am signed up for one on Saturday and will be 7 weeks pregnant.  I still want to participate to support my sister and am thinking about skipping obstacles and taking it slow.  This is my 6th mudrun, but they were only 6 miles, but very difficult.  My midwife said something like this (as opposed to marathons, etc.) is extremely stressful on the body.  I was just curious how you felt and if it is possible just to run a lot of it...(even though I agree, I can't wait to run it not pregnant!)
  • @eshimak. Did you run the Tough Mudder? I'll be 9 weeks for the Georgia Tough Mudder this weekend!
